The Freeze is NOT a weak ball by any means.
As to your hand positions.....I struggle with instances like you describe, all the time. My first inclination is to come up the back of the ball, in order to decrease my backend reaction.
Spinning the ball will definitely get it longer, but your backend will be wayy too much.....thus the 9 pins, because your entry angle is so severe.
I would tend to stay with up-the-back, and move in with my feet, but that's just me.
The other option would be to scuff and dull one of the pieces you're using, to slow the backend movement of the ball. Just my 2 cents.
