Chris Barnes one of the few who throws a 16 lb ball?
« on: March 29, 2007, 10:02:58 PM »
I finally got around to watching the telecast from last Sunday and I think that it was Randy Peterson who said that Chris Barnes was one of the few left on tour that still throws a 16 lb ball.  This really took me by surprise!  I figured that everyone with the exception of maybe Norm Duke and some of the other smaller guys threw a 16 lb ball.  Is there not an advantage to throwing a heavier ball?  Sorry for the long post, but that really took me by surprise.

My average went up about 10 pins when I dropped back to 15 lbs. I was able to get more speed and revs and the carry was better, plus I didn't get tired by the end of the night.

If I could carry the 10, I'd be dangerous.

Think of it this way, when you are bowling hundreds of games each month, 1 extra pound is a lot of extra pressure on your wrist, arm and shoulder. In the past the heavier equipment carried better. But with the balls today, a 15lb ball will carry just as well as a 16lb ball. And on the drier conditions, as imnutzo mentioned, you can throw it a little harder.

I currently use 16 lb equipment, and still average about 19 mph. I be afraid to see what it would be with 15 lb balls.

Yeah, the advantage is better pin carry when the lanes are really slick.  You have one more pound sliding into the pins so the ball deflects less.  If there is adequate friction the advantage is probably not there but that isn't always the case, especially if you aren't a boomer.

on my league(gold pin) i do not carry 14 or 15 lb balls, for strike, at all, carry always suffered, lots of corner pins. im also more consistent on speed and rev with 16lb, less i will over throw it

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

Despite the greatness of Duke and he is greatness, I believe the reasoning of all his injuries in recent years is because of the 16 pound ball. As a general rule, I was usually told if you weigh under 200 pounds you shouldn't be using a 16 pound ball. Robert Smith uses a 16 pound ball. He's around 200 at least but he isn't in terrific shape. He's had back problems and now a hip problem perhaps due to the 16 lb ball.

Thanks for all the responses.  I have always thrown a 16 lb. ball myself, so I was just curious.  Thanks again.

Ironically enough, I believe Norm Duke is one of the few that still uses 16lb. equipment.

I don't know, could be just my .02, but I recently dropped down to a 14 weight, after 15 for several years. I just found that this weight supplies better control for me, and I would probably say that equipment that is heavier tends to carry better -  would be a common misconception.
I just took out my new Domination for league, and thought I was just carrying the house, probably just as good as my 15 weights.
What it really comes down to is the amount of friction that allows for better carry.
On a heavier condition you could pipe your 16 pound oilier up the 2nd arrow and be leaving 5-10's. The object you are throwing is just simply too heavy and cannot change directions soon enough.
However, if you were to pick up the same ball in a lighter weight like 14, it will begin to change direction quicker and have more push through the pocket.

Didn't exactly mean to hijack the thread but I just thought I would stick up for the wimps that throw 14

That's what I heard as well.  I heard that most are throwing 15, with some even thinking about dropping to 14 (due to the number of games being thrown) - depending on if they see any difference in pin carry.  I don't know if there are many pros actually throwing 14.
