CLASH--- Belmonte v. Rash
« on: February 04, 2014, 05:24:16 PM »
Have not seen any post regarding this telecast. I thought it would be boring, but ended up watching to the last ball was thrown. Would not mind seeing some othe one on one matches between my favorites. Maybe Duke v. Weber. Or Barnes v. Mallot.

Also, did anyone notice that they listed Mastermind Genius as 9.5 and the Mastermind as 9.0.  I realize that layout can be, and in this case did, affect ball strength and reaction. Rash used the Mastermind on the shorter pattern, so I must assume he layed it out less aggressively and used the strong cover to blend the over under off the dry. Still, I think that this was somewhat misleading for the novice.

The best part about the whole show was Jason Couch absolutely trashing 2 handed bowling.

I quite enjoyed that myself.  I have a feeling that not a lot of players on tour like Belmonte much.

I thought it was quite entertaining (except for the boxing style entrances and announcing).

I also really enjoyed having current competitive bowlers on the mic because they really, really know what they are talking about.

Congrats to Belmo - I was thrilled to see him win. (and to see Rash lose :P)

The bowlers on tour who don't like it can deal with it.  Although, I feel that most have the utmost respect for his talent, they don't need to wine about him having the biggest pocket.  WRW may have had the world's smallest pocket and he still won the most titles ever, so, there's that.

The fact that Jason averaged over 240 through the TOC is an obvious testament to his ability transition through stringing strikes, and that's damn impressive.

I believe the rift has more to do with some of the players had to do the point system to be exempt and the PBA gave Belmo what some think was given a free ride.

Didn't they just throw that match together because they had the TV time, etc and were supposed to have another Chris Paul celebrity thing?  I know Patrick Allen was bummed because he was gonna get paid to bowl in it.  I think they cancelled it because CP3 was injured.

If that's the case, I understand the gripe.  Belmo won more that some do for winning a PBA telecasted tournament.  It's been addressed here many times, but the $ situation is a sad one indeed.

Best part was getting to listen to Barnes. Best communicator and most knowledge in the sport.

You can bet that if Belmonte was throwing something made in Kentucky, Couch and Jones would not be bitching about 2-handers.

I always enjoy it when Barnes is in the booth.

As for 2 handed bowling, I think they all recognized the fact that Belmo has always bowled that way and has put a lot of work into his craft.  His balance at the line is impeccable, his accuracy and ability to adjust is amazing and his spare shooting is spot on.  If it was all because of 2 handers having a large pocket, then we would see more Osku, but Osku has spare shooting issues and I don't think he is as versatile.

Two handed is not easy, but if you can be accurate and pick up spares, there is most certainly an advantage.  I know I won't be trying it anytime soon though, I have accuracy issues with one hand, lol.

Jason Couch annoyed me especially since he's a lefty and also had somewhat of an "advantage" during his career.

Loved Couch's outspokeness on two handed bowling.  Tommy Jones agreed with him but he was more tactful.  Barnes wants to be a broadcaster so he was the most PC about it but he wasn't that enthusiastic about the two handed style either.  Belmonte was shoved down ours and the touring players' throats by the USBC and the PBA.  Still not seeing the two handed "revolution" they were hoping for.  At practice the other day there was a teen boy who was trying to throw it two handed.  I gave him some tips about what he was doing different from what Belmonte does.  I said its an interesting style but if you want to bowl as you get older you would be better off learning how to throw the ball like Pete Weber.  He said he would watch tapes of Weber and compare the two styles and make a choice.  Hope he goes Weber style.
Long Gone also posts the honest truth which is why i respect him. He posts these things knowing some may not like it.

I agree with Long Gone Daddy in regards to Belmo.  There is no doubt he's talented, etc., but since he's been on board the PBA has made him their "poster child" and anything he does gets attention.  The other players aren't chopped liver, but you'd never know it...

Regarding the match, I thought it was entertaining all the way.  Rash bowled well and Belmo did, too striking at the very end to win it.  Someone had to win and the other had to lose, but over time each one will probably win his share.

I thought the Clash was well done.  This should give the PBA some new ideas for tv formats.  Instead of a 4 person tv finals doing a stepladder; why not do a situation like they did for Team USA Trials?  Have 2 guys bowling on one pair and the other 2 bowling on another pair simultaneously?  They do 2 game matches with total pinfall moving on to the final where you take the 2 winners of those matches for the Championship.

I, too, would like to see more Clashes in the future.  Heck, maybe instead of doing team events outdoors for a Summer Swing; each week you have a clash of two different bowlers with the winners of each show getting together the last week for a Final Clash. I am curious as to what the ratings were for that Clash last week.

I watched and it was an ok telecast.  It does get kinda of boring just watching the same two guys in my opinion.  I actually would like a show where maybe they only televise the top 3 players in a step ladder and use the remainder of the show showing highlights of the qualifying/match play rounds.  Obviously this wouldn't work for LIVE shows, but how many live shows are there now-a-days anyhow.

I also liked having bowlers in the broadcast booth.  They give real insight/opinions other than just the "i'll try to spice this up stuff"  It was also very apparent Couch doesn't think very highly of Belmo.  All in all it was a good show

I didn't mind the clash, but they have to figure a way to exploit other rivalries.  The Belmo v Rash is getting old.  They just happen to be 2 of the best bowlers in the PBA right now and they supposedly don't like eachother (I think they overplayed that a bit on the telecast though it was maybe more true during the whole "bottlegate" incident.)

I think it was maybe Couch that brought it up, but fans of the PBA don't want to see these guys all the time, we see them enough on telecasts as it is.

I like the three game format because you can watch them move through the transition.
