PBA Experience leagues to return beginning Nov. 1

USBC Sport Bowling members looking to challenge themselves on the same conditions seen on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour again will have that opportunity with the return of the PBA Experience.

PBA Experience leagues will be back in action beginning Nov. 1, and bowlers will be able to test their skills on the Viper, Shark, Scorpion, Chameleon, Cheetah, Earl Anthony, Carmen Salvino, Detroit Open, World Championship, Tournament of Champions and U.S. Open oil patterns featured at national and regional PBA events. Patterns will be available in the coming weeks as they are adapted for the various lane machines.

"Bowlers really seem to enjoy measuring themselves against the pros they see on TV and other Sport bowlers," said USBC Executive Director Stu Upson. "We are pleased to once again partner with the PBA to offer this option to leagues across the country."

Competing on the same lane patterns used at the highest level helps bowlers focus on accuracy and shot making and puts an emphasis on spares. What sets a Sport pattern apart from a traditional house condition is the ratio of oil applied to the lane. A Sport pattern is much flatter and less forgiving, while a house shot allows for a greater margin of error.

While competing in a PBA Experience league does require a membership upgrade, there are many benefits to taking the Sport Bowling challenge. Along with being able to pinpoint weaknesses and hone their skills, Sport members are eligible for special awards, member rewards, great discounts from bowling's top manufacturers and local pro shops and a members-only section on BOWL.com that features tips and other valuable information.

"PBA Experience leagues allow bowlers to experience what it's like to bowl on the PBA Tour, but at their own pace and in a more comfortable environment," said PBA Commissioner Tom Clark. "These patterns are familiar and recognizable, and bowlers can improve by watching the PBA telecasts for strategies or by reading tips from their favorite PBA stars. We're all looking forward to the return of this program."

The international oil patterns currently being used for Team USA Experience leagues will continue to be available.

Did they listen or did Tom Clark and the PBA just realize they weren't going to get another  $0.15 out of us?

I will say I had a more enjoyable time bowling on the PBA patterns than the Kegel sport series...

Amen GoodTimes.  I averaged about 10 pins less on the Team USA patterns.  Turns out, I am not very good at guessing whether the line will dry out after 2 frames or 3 frames.  I was planning on reducing the amount of hook this year and go for heavier roll, hoping to stay on one line for 5 frames or so.  I got real tired of the adjustment for a 4-6 split turns out to be a 2-8-10 split.  My hats off to Team USA for their ability to average over 200.  You are truly gifted.

A couple of questions come to mind when I read this:

 

1.  Will using the named patterns still cost the league/center the requisite money?

 

2.  Does using the PBA animal patterns (and others) entice more bowlers than using the Team USA patterns?

 

3.  Would anyone rather bowl on those patterns and have the cost come out of the league if the center doesn't want to front the money?

 

4.  If the center was willing to pay the money, would you rather have that money added to the prize fund and use the FREE Team USA patterns, which are just as challenging?

Don't get me wrong, I am all for more challenging shots.  I bowled a Team USA league this summer and was quickly humbled.  But at the same time, where I bowl, the bowling center most likely cannot generate enough interest in the PBA league to justify the cost.  And if the cost were to come out of the league because of this, I would rather keep the money and bowl on the Team USA patterns.

Seriously! Those Team USA patterns were brutal. After a couple games, the fronts were getting pretty toasted, but the midlane and backends tightened up. It got really, really difficult to create enough entry angle to carry once you had to move left with your feet, and if you did make that adjustment, you were back and forth between jumping through the nose and blowing right through the breakpoint.

Ran a PBA Experience League for four years.  Got tired of charging people an extra $15 for awards they'll never achieve.  We had one 299 game in 4 years.  The reality of the program is it's overpriced.  It shouldn't cost extra to bowl on patterns that the USBC prefers you bowl on.  You should get a discount on your membership for registering an average in these leageus. 

 

The league is responsible for every aspect of making sure the pattern and league are run in accordance with Sport Bowling with little to no help from the USBC.  And then they take every CENT of the $15 upgrade fee.  Not a dime back to the league or association that does all the hard labor.  It's a rip-off.
