What's gonna happen to the lanes?

Excuse my ignorance when it comes to lanes, but our local (and pretty much only) house will be closing tuesday to resurface the lanes.  Now, they are wood lanes (i'm not sure how old though), and so what exactly is this gonna do?  How can I expect it to play, differently or the same?  Sorry, I have just never been around for a lane resurfacing....

Thanks for any answers.  Unless they are like most of mine and full of crap.

They will play differently, but the level of difference will have as much to do with the competence of the crew doing the work as it will your lane man to reprogram the machine.

Fresh wood will often seem to hook earlier in the heads and the back ends will suck up carrydown a little quicker.  Total hook may be reduced because of the ball burning up early.

You also will probably lose the track area for most of the summer as that will be largely cut out when they cut the lanes.

Look at it on the bright side...they did it the smart way and waited for the summer, which means no drastic changes in the middle of a full season and it potentially draws the bowlers in over the summer to practice.

Hmm, that's not that bad.  I have a Thing Returns I can just send through the head, and play down and in I suppose.

But you're right, leagues ended like 3 weeks ago, so they're doing it while there is less traffic.

we just got done installing new amf hpl's and undergrounds. cant wait to get evrything cleaned up and bowl on them.

My friend was telling me that in the house that he'll be running next season, that there are a pair of lanes that due to poor care now run basically uphill to the pocket. He's going to be there for the resurfacing of the lanes this summer, and I'm sure that the scores will improve as a result. I find that the first couple of weeks on fresh wood lanes you do have to be more direct and the track line doesn't play the same as before, but once you get a few weeks of lineage down the lanes open up. But what do I know about playing a track line, I'm a wrongsider....

I am not sure about other places....but when my center screens the lanes Or resurfaces the lanes they tend to dry up quicker. The backends will almost ignore carrydown until they are used for awhile.

The major drawback to freshly resurfaced lanes is that they will track up a bowling ball really bad. My suggestion (and this is what I do) is for the first few times you go and bowl, use an old ball that you do not mind having look like a piece of ^#%#. When I say it tracks up a ball really bad....I mean it will make a new ball look like it has 50 games on it.

HB, they are resurfacing, not reinstalling anything.

There wasn't really much of a track anywhere, so I guess it won't be terribly different.

I think you'll be surprised at the difference.
I've been bowling at one center for 6 seasons now. They always resurface/screen the lanes on Memorial Day.
Here's what happens - the scores tank for the first week or 2 after a resurface. Historically, the senior tour has had a stop 3 weeks after the resurface - they're not coming this year.
Anyway - as soon as there's been a fair amount of play, the lanes start to track up, and scores start to go up. They keep going up until around February, where they start to go back down. Then we all start looking forward to Memorial day, where they resurface again.

Well, I mean less different than what I was expecting....I thought it would feel like a flood or something, but I guess not.

And since I'm still a lower average, and I'm getting better on my spares, I won't have to worry too much.  Most people in my house don't know what the Pin or CG are, so needless to say I know more than them.
