Club memberships
« on: December 20, 2003, 01:37:01 AM »
Sawbones got me thinking about how bowling mirrors society in general.  I was wondering if membership is dwindling in clubs and organizations like the Elks, Moose lodges, American Legion, etc... due to less participation in the upcoming generations?  I look around leagues and see that at 28 I'm usually one of the 5 youngest on the league.  Are people my age and younger not joining bowling and other clubs that support group involvement and such?  Did they used to?  I know that other than bowling, I do not belong to any of these clubs (I know the Legion has military requirements to join, but know very little about many of the others).  Yet when I see someone who is pulling into the parking lot of these places, it is usually gentlemen with more years under their belt than I have.  Any thoughts on this change in society?

As for our moose the average age is about 65.
It is HARD to get young couples to dance to
50's and 60's country and beebop.
Whenever the officers are contronted about this
they say we cannot make our older members mad.
there are about 12-15 younger guys (28-30 year olds)
Where are all the younger people???

Out having fun. listening to their kind of music.
I rarely do anything but bowl league at the Moose I belong to
for this very reason. I was there listening to a band one
night that started to play MetallicAs Master of Puppets, they
were threatened to be removed before the end of the 1st rift.
Is that any way to get young people involved??

Same goes with the one local bowling alley owner. He kicked
about a dozen people (all were FAMILIES with KIDS out of his alley)
in a 2 year span before he realized he was losing business....... DUH!!!!!
I was included in this boot. "I was too rowdy" was the ONLY reason I ever got
from him. I now travel about a hour to bowl in one league and have NOT BEEN BACK to that house since. No one promotes around here either.

I asked to run a tourney at one house and was turned down FLAT.
I travel 45 miles one way to bowl in a summer scratch league, and travel 45 minutes to a different bowling alley to bowl in my winter league. Why??

idiotic owners. (One stole league prize funds and other
one was mentioned above) I bowl one other night in the winter at the local Moose. BEER NIGHT. too much wall for me to play on. cannot keep the ball off the wrongside of the headpin unless you play 5th arrow swing to 4 board at about 20 MPH. NOT my cup of tea for sure.

Someone here is going to say .. he says the same thing all the time .. but believe me .. I believe it's true .. and the question is asked so I'll chime in with my answer:

Bowling PRICED itself out of the picture. If you have kids (under 12) and you want to take them to OPEN bowling .. Prices range (for Jr's) somewhere around $3 a line. Shoes, something to eat .. say 3 games .. (probable takes no more then 1 1/2 hours) One kid plus yourself and maybe the wife .. comes to quite a bit. Will a 17/20 year old take his date BOWLING? .. Can he afford it? I think that is the BIGGEST contributor to YOUNG FOLKS not be available for bowling. YES .. there are quite a few that do bowl in my area .. but NO WHERE near what it USE TO BE (a few years back .. not when I was a kid).

OTHER ORGANIZATIONS .. Yes there is a FALL OFF of younger generations getting involved. I belong to a number of organizations that seem to be attended too by mostly OLDER FOLKS (like myself) .. although efforts are made to attract the young ones .. most efforts FAIL!

Tried my best to stay with your questions .. hope I explained my thoughts!  ..

I wish that BUCK PER GAME would catch on .. running SALES like that will help to get the young folk back into the game.

Remember .. I'm not talking to MYSELF here .. as a SENIOR the most I pay is $1.45 per line in one house.$1.25 per line in a second and $1.00 per line in a third center. My observation is of YOUNG people not bowling .. those being supported by their parents .. the PARENTS (in most cases) can't afford it and the YOUNG FOLKS just getting started in life have a difficult time meeting their NORMAL BILLS without spending BIG BUCKS on recreation!
