Clueless Ebay seller?
« on: June 15, 2003, 07:30:56 PM »
Okay, I saw this listing on Ebay.  The title just said "bowling ball" and it had and Storm Erase-it pictured so I took a look.  The description read:

Ebonite Maxium 12 pound Bowling in Good Condition. Perfect for new bowlers and Those looking for a good spare ball or to step up in weight. It has a good Hook and hits hard. The Color is Purple and Black.

OKay, out of curiosity I emailed the person about the discrepancy and they said: The discripition is correct. I found its easier to sell something when you have a picture of a similar item. sorry about any confusion.

What, did they think the "color" of the balls matched?  First, there is no Ebonite MaxiUm.  Second, the ball is plastic.  What hook?  Third, how hard a plastic hits depends on you, the bowler. Finally, the seller has a rating of "2" so you tell me, when did they "find it easier to sell something when you have a picture?"

I'd rather have a seller admit complete ignorance. And, for pete's sake, put up an honest picture or no picture.

"Clueless" is being way too kind.  Sellers who put up pictures of products they don't have for sale should be banned from eBay.  There's just no excuse for this!

There are lots of incorrect descriptions on ebay! Many sellers state one thing in the title and another in the description. A recent seller listed a 15 lb. ball in the title and said 16 lb. in the description. An email to him identified it as 16 lb. Not showing a picture of the actual item is criminal, as often the bidders make their decisions based upon the picture. The descriptions often are pitiful, especially on bowling balls. The sellers do not list the top weight, pin out dimension etc. Just proves there are lots of idiots out there with computers!

My husband sells on Ebay for a living. I spend a lot of time there looking for stuff - especially bowling equipment. I've found the same thing. However, to give the sellers the benefit of the doubt - these folks probably found the ball at a garage sale for a buck, and don't have a clue about any part of the game. Most (certainly not all) sellers will gladly change or amend their listing if it is in error, and misrepresenting the merchandise. Those who don't should be reported to Ebay. (try support@ebay.com). Ebay stays on top of this kind of stuff -as they should.

Speaking of ignorant sellers - I was at a garage sale a while ago, and the seller had a plastic galaxy 300 ball with conventional drilling, that weighed around 12 pounds. It was in one of those ultra cheap vinyl bags, and had a pair of totally worn out shoes with it. They were asking $50. I explained to the seller that the whole setup would be worth around $10 on a very good day - but that it probably wouldn't sell unless it was marked down to $2 or $3.
I was told, in a very authoritative voice, that ALL bowling balls now cost over $200 each, so that ball was a tremendous bargain. Period. I took the seller over to my car, showed her the 12 bowling  balls in the back, and said that I really did know what I was talking about. She accused me of taking advantage of her. Oh, well. She must have listed the outfit on Ebay next...
