Question for bowling center counter workers?
« on: October 02, 2005, 10:39:17 AM »
When a bowler walks in with a 3 balls roller and a couple of 2 ball totes, to shoot a few practice games, why would a counterperson, look at you and say: "Do you need shoes?"

This has always puzzled me.
It seems to happen (occasionally) in large centers, especially AMF.

When I was bowling in New York City I walked into the bowling center at the Port Authority just as the new counterperson was getting trained by the manager in how to run a bowling transaction. He saw my Storm 2 ball tote bag and said "I guess I don't have to ask if you need bowling shoes, you look like a serious bowler...".... which gave me a good chuckle.

Matt,
I went into a small senter in Wisconsin a few years ago, with my 3 ball roller. The woman at the counter, said: "You planning on movin' in? I don't think we have any rooms available..."
Thought itwas pretty funny, also.

And even if it isnt part of the secret shoppers thing, it's courteous to ask if they need shoes, because, well, they might need shoes.  There's a guy that bowls tuesday nights where I work, decent bowler, brings usually four balls with him, uses house shoes because he doesn't own his own.  I guess you can never know, and it's better off being polite and asking.  I'm pretty sure it's not meant to be offensive if someone asks if you need shoes or not.  I guess it does go along with the "would you like fries with that" thing, because if you didnt ask if they wanted fries or not, and didnt give them any fries even though they wanted it but didnt say it because it was expected they were going to get fries with it, I'm sure they'd be pretty pissed off when they didnt get their fries.  So, I guess it could be for reassurance, as well.

There was a great post about stories from the counter person, but it has been a few years.  If ANYBODY can dig it up, that would be awesome.  I don't know how to search the entire database....

It has always been a question of mine as well.  But I see both sides of the coin, it is better to ask than not ask I guess.  As for the guy with 4 balls and no shoes, thats ridiculous.  If you can afford 4 balls, spend 35 bucks on some entry level dexters for cryin out loud, unless he gets house shoes for free.  If not, someone should show him how much he spends annually just to rent a foot fungus.
