After about a year of bowling, I was stuck around 150 average and knew it was time to get lessons.
My coach asked me the first time if I was willing to unlearn everything I was doing and start over. He warned me my average would go way down, and I would need to "practice, practice, practice" as all of my bad habits would be fighting to come back.
He was right about everything. And he got my ball speed and revs up, I consistently hit my target, I am way more confident, and I look like a completely different bowler. Now, after about 4-5 months of bowling like crap, 5-6 lessons, and lots of practice, my average is going up again, and I just bowled my highest game ever (222).
I am so glad I got a coach!
