Bowling Accessory Design Invention/Idea
« on: December 12, 2008, 03:15:51 AM »
This will blow your mind so get ready.  If you are like me, you would like to be able to know more about your bowling so you can fix stuff and actually know precisely what you are changing and what you are not.  What I propose to be invented will cure all these things and should be financially in range of any serious bowler who already spends money on leagues, tournaments, and equipment.

My invention: Bowling Ball Measuring Device

What Does It Do: It measures your ball speed, rev rate, accuracy, and angle of rotation!

Where Does It Go: It is placed at the foul line in an area parallel to the pit but away from where you end your approach.

How Big Is It: It can be the size of a GPS device that has either a tripod or suction platform for secured placement:

How Does It Do It:  By placing the targeting system towards the pins and using existing technology of radar (mostly used by the police), and using technology already in place in current bowling alleys that measure speed already, it measures the change in distance away from the device.  It also measures the the rotation by having you the bowler place a coin sized metallic sticker on the ball.  In the field of play it can measure your initial revs by measuring the speed which this sticker revolves around the ball.  Also using this sticker, the angle of rotation is measured.

To measure the accuracy, the ball will show up in the given view finder as to where it rolled over down the lane.  It can either do this through recording or through graphical means.

How much does it Cost: $300-400 initially with decreased cost over time.

Just not at the $300-$400 price tag.

The problem I see with these things is that they tend to make people's motions robotic instead of free flowing, since over-analysis sets in, and that ain't ever a good thing.

Bowling is best accomplished when the mind is devoid of most thought, except for the very basic prompts necessary, such as where to stand and which target to look at, set-up at the stance, keeping eyes on the target, proper foot/hand/ball start, natural gait, the feeling of the ball coming cleanly off the hand at the release point and the follow-thru (these are only examples, and since everyone is different, we all key in on different things during the stance/approach/delivery)—and the less we think of these things, the more naturally we are able to reproduce these motions, the better off our game ultimately is.

YOU should do some research. C.A.T.S. was developed by the ABC/WIBC in the early 90's and it does everything you described and then some.  http://www.kegel.net/products/products-cats.htm

Did you not read your link to see how big that thing is?  I am talking something that is handheld.  Most patents today are improvements over things of the past.  Anyways, forget it.  I am tired of introducing new ideas on here to just have them laughed at.  I will be calling my friend about this patent idea and deal with it on my own.  I thought we were all a team on this site. :/

It all depends on how specific the original patent is.  In the chemical industry, you'd be surprised how little you can make a change (but has to be a specific, detailed change, not a general one) to an existing patent, then call it your own.  Of course, you have to have a ton of data that supports your claim, and have a lawyer that knows his stuff.  I'm included on a patent for a new surface cross linking process for our super absorbent polymer and the document the lawyer created is over 100 pages long. But still, depending on how the other patents are written, Necro might have a chance.  It still takes a ton of work to make it happen (and having a friend in the patent office means nothing), then you have to either build it yourself, or get a company interested in buying your idea.  It takes a loooooong time from idea to successful patent, to commercial product.

How would it measure rev rate and angle of rotation? My understanding of Radar is that it is fairly simple in execution simply measuring how long it takes light waves to come back when bounced off another object whether it is the surface of the ball or a metal sticker on it. It seems you would need some sort of digital imaging device that would be able to "see" the sticker and perform digital image processing to determine rev rate. There are some pretty intense calculations - 4 dimensional (x,y,z,time) trigonometry - that would need to happen assuming everything guesses right when the sticker isn't visible (did the rotational angle change or is the sticker just rotating around the other side of the ball).

We used some of that technology on the Grand Challenge project at VT.  Basically it was a $1,000,000 competition to get a self-run robotic vehicle with simulated AI to go across the desert of 70 miles.  It's sensor system had some of the technology I would use for the bowling measurement system.
