Ways to try and get out of a slump?
« on: December 11, 2008, 02:51:12 AM »
I have been in a slump it seems like for the last month and a half. My averages which were 210 at both houses, has dropped to 204 now.

It seems like I can't put 3 solid games together anymore, it seems it is always 1 good game, masked by a really terrible game, then a decent 3rd game. To struggle for a 6 or low 6 which is slightly under my average.

I have a really well-rounded arsenal. It is purely operator and mental aspect. It seems like lately I am thinking of that one ridiculous game that is going to happen in my set and it's like I make it happen. Those games are plagued by bad shots, that leave splits and not being able to string strikes. It looks as though all skill leaves my head in those games, and it is really getting me frustrated.

For those who go through these, what has worked for you in the past. I will say I ahve been bowling in loeagues and subbing in 1 that has kept me from being able to get to the lanes and practice, so that doesn't help. Any ideas?

I know the feeling....I'm having the same problem right now.  I'm slowly starting to get myself out of it.

All I have done is just to try and focus on the basics.  Keep my first step low and short, don't try and muscle the ball back and through, don't grab it at the bottom and just try and focus on my mark.

So far its been working, and my scores are starting to go back up.  I'd gotten into a rut for a while where I was trying to go too fast, throw the ball to hard and tear the cover of it.  Got me into all sorts of trouble.

Just try and focus on the basics...don't try to do too much....pretty soon, you'll notice everything will start feeling like it did when you were bowling at your best.

LaneHammer20, what is happening during the game when you struggle most? reason i ask is that when i was in a big slump i realized i was targeting too close and so if i go right it hooks, and move left it skates. so i have worked on moving my eyes down lane about 10-15 farther. then once i have a good reaction, i stay there. and if the ball starts jumoing, instead of moving both eyes and feet, i just move my feet for the most part. this way, im still hitting the same spot at the same distance, where i know the ball is reacting well. does that make sense? it avoids getting an over/under reaction. i have tried this on my traveling league at different houses and has worked well so far. just a suggestion.

let us know when you break out of it and what you did. good luck and hope you get out of it soon. it is truly frustrating.

it seems as though I can't seem to find a consistent throw where I am hitting my mark. they are just scattered everywhere, and with it seems alot of bad luck anything in the face is a split. I push one throw, then tug the next.

ately I have been wondering if where i am looking when throwing which is at the arrows is a good choice. ometimes I think looking further down would be better, but when i do it it seems like I can't be as accurate because there really isn't anything to look at. i wish 10-15 ft past the arrows there were some dots or something. i think that would help.

First, I wouldn't worry about your arsenal.  For your next league session, pick your favorite, most comfortable 2-3 bowling balls and just take those.  Having options is great, but sometimes having too many gets you thinking about equipment changes instead of realizing a mechanical flaw.

Next, everybody has one or two things they really struggle with.  For me, a big one is staying down at the line.  The other is my hand position in my swing and keeping my hand behind the ball.  So, figure out what your sticking points are, and focus on doing those correct.

Earlier this year I went a good 5 weeks without even a 200 game, saw my average drop from 204 to 190.  I finally figured out that because I wasn't staying down, I wasn't finishing strong enough and my shots were all over the place.  I worked on my finish and my average has started to climb back up again.

Last thing is to try to keep the frustration level to a minimum, especially when you make those first couple of bad shots.  I've always found it's easier to rebound from a bad break if you keep a level head and not over-analyze what went wrong

Back to basics. What does your pre-shot routine look like?  Is it consistently good? Ok. How about your stance? Push-away? Work forward piece by piece through release and follow through. Take a practice session and pay close attention to each piece, focusing on one at a time.

Break it down into pieces and find the culprit. Don't forget the mental game.

If there's someone who can watch you and offer observations it can be a huge help. A video camera even more if you can compare good to bad shots.

a) Stop bowling for 10 or 15 Days
b) Move out of your comfort zone for a month
c) Do anything that will take you out of your false muscle memory and it will recover.

The best way to get out of a slump is to do a fat chick. You will be so worried about your friends finding out that you won't be worried about your game.

Trust me, I'm an expert.

Haha that would probably do the trick. I think my girl finding out would worry me more than my friends.

I see some of you have said maybe a break to clear your head. That is something I am considering. When you say a break though, does that mean a break with no practice bowling, or just a break altogether?

I noticed something in my last night's 590. Whihc was more consistent than what has been happening. I definitly need to work on a having a good pre shot routine that I do the same way everytime. I noticed I did different stuff everytime I went stepped up to throw the ball. That is not helping at all.
