How important is consistent rev rate
« on: January 15, 2006, 01:05:45 AM »
How important is consistent rev rate.  If your rev rate is 350 and for some reason you don't get out of the ball quite right and your rev rate drops to 300 on that particular shot of if the other way where you got out very clean and put a little more rev into the release and it jumped up to 400.  How does that effect ball travel and pin carry?

I know there are varibles like short oil, long oil, dry lanes and oily lanes.

Inconsistent rev rate will affect length somewhat, backend reaction and carry bigtime. For example, you throw one 350 rpm and strike dead flush. Next shot, 300rpm, you should see some increase in length, but the biggest difference will be in backend and carry. Ball will not flip as hard and will hit flatter. On the flip side, if you grab it and get 400 rpm, length will be slightly shorter, but backend much jumpier, resulting in high hits. Keep in mind two factors: Lane conditions and type of rev rate: Maximum side roll(Axis tilt), or up the back more. Also,if lanes are very oily, varying rev rates will have greater effect than drier lanes. Hope this helps

If you blame the lane conditions for your bad scores, then you had better thank them for your good ones!!

Very well put Sawbones! I couldn't agree more. As a former cranker (Back in the urethane days), I learned the hard way. My new philosophy: Straight is great!
Don't get me wrong, I still hook it pretty good, and straight is a relative term with todays balls ,but I have much more control and consistency using the less is more thought. Think about it. On tour, you will see the occasional monster cranker make or win a show, but whos up there week after week: the guys who can hook it if need be but mostly go fairly straight. I have many students that want hook it more, and my first question is: Why? The greatest bowler of all time (IMO), Earl Anthony, said it best: the most direct line to the pocket is the best.
