ball drilling advice
« on: May 22, 2011, 11:17:03 PM »
I am considering drilling a strong ball, theory or something like that with a 6 in pin to pap with the pin above the middle finger. I havew drilled a couple of weak balls like this and generally like the way they roll.I know that a pin this far from the pap promotes basckend but also makes the balls reaction to friction later and makes it,"weaker". I guess what I am wondering is would this be a waste of a strong ball to drill it like this. Most of my strong balls have 4 to 5 in pins but I dont seem to be able to get any reaction down lane . I am rev challenged and my speed is on the low avg, side,14 15 mph. What I am thinking is that on shots where the inside reads early and the outside is slick I could play deeper and get better recovery. Any positive advice will be greatly appreciated, any ball suggestions would be great too, thanks in advance.

just an update to my qyuestion about drilling a strong ball weak. I drilled my alpha  max 30 x 6x70,pin ended up being just under my middle finger. The ball ended up being nothing more on the back and really not much longer. This drill actually did make the ball more controlled and predictable, but even at 1000 grit its still no barn burner. Unfortunately this drill brought the ball closer to my rising star so no need to carry both, the alpha is just another in the list of balls that were great for some that didnt match up with me, all in all I wish I hadnt redrilled it

If you want to waste less money and stop guessing with layouts, come to BowlingChat.net with your release specs and get layout suggestions for each ball and benchmarks for symmetrics and asymmetrics.

If you wanted a ball to go long, why would you use a 30* drilling angle? The first angle determines length, while the pin to pap distance (6" in your case) determines flare. The 70* val angle should promote a slower transition off of the dry.

Sounds to me like the drilling angles weren't exactly what you were looking for.

If it doesn't fall down the first time, pull out the pistol and make sure it doesn't make the same mistake twice.

I didnt want a ball to go long. It was an experiment. I wanted to see what the drills set up would do on a stronger ball. I wanted to see if giving a longer length perspective to a stronger ball would do,I was just offering feed back on the experiment.

 Dual Angle Rules of Thumb

  • First angle (MB to PAP) dictates how early the ball breaks (10 degrees earliest roll and 90 degrees latest roll).
  • Pin to PAP, Amount of Flare
  • Last angle (PAP to VAL) dictates how quick the ball transitions at breakpoint (20 degrees quickest and 70 degrees slowest).

So, a drill layout of 70 x 4 x 35 will roll long, have a strng flare and transition quickly when the ball hits the dry.  See the attached link:  http://www.morichbowling.com/Drilling/DualAngleSeminar/DualAngleSeminar.htm

The other option would be to drill based on PSA layout used on asymetric balls.   Check out the 4 x 4 x 2 drill layout on the attached link:  http://www.rotogrip.com/products/pdf/asymmetrical-drill-guide.pdf

I have  a Theory drilled at 5 1/2 x 4 1/4 x 3 (Pin in gripline above bridge) and it is definitely a long and weak drill for the Theory (in spite of the Theory being a strong ball).   I would suggest a 4 x 4 x2 or thereabouts.
