Title: Cold Blood or Mastermind?
Post by: coach scott on January 21, 2014, 11:59:10 AM
Debating between the Cold Blood or Mastermind. Always liked Hammer products & usually that's all I throw, but I'm getting interested in this Mastermind. Just trying to get some feedback see what some of you think. I'm a lefty, average in the 200's-2teens, don't do much to the ball, but accurate & good spare bowler, have a bad habit of coming out of the side of the ball so I like strong equipment.

The mastermind is going to be a much stronger ball. Its a solid cover compared to the cold blood which is a pearl cover. The mastermind is prob the strongest ball out right now. I know the storm lovers will prob say the hypercell but i believe the mastermind has a slight edge. The guys rollling the mastermind in league really love it. As for the cold blood, i havent seen to many of these in the couple houses i bowl in to give a fair comparison.

No personal ties to either, but have heard only good about mastermind,  and not so good on the cold blood, even from people who liked the first blood

I'd suggest the Mastermind.  It can be polished to tame it down a bit if it's too much, but it has excellent length for being such an aggressive ball.  I'd worry about the Cold Blood's durability, Hammer's pearls typically die very quickly (at least in my area), and if it's a difference between a big hooking solid or a big hooking pearl, I'd go solid every time.

Wait a couple of weeks and the Mastermind will be selling at a deep discount on ebay. Just like every other ball from that plant.

nothing but good things about the Mastermind. Cold Blood has had some mixed reviews. If I needed something for oil right now I would put the Mastermind at the top of my list

When I was looking for an oil ball, I was leaning toward the cold blood, and had no interest in the mastermind. I threw both of them, along with the antics at my pro shop, with the cold blood and antics oob and the mastermind with a coat of polish. I threw on a slightly used shot and a fresh shot. Honestly, the cold blood hit like a nice fluffy pillow compared to the other two balls. I gave it back after 2 or 3 shots. The antics and mastermind were close in terms of strength and hitting power for me, and I only chose the mastermind because I liked my nightmare and misfit pearl so much, and wanted to give Brunswick a try. I had a hard time carrying with the mastermind on my league shots because the surface was so rough, but after I changed it to 3000 grit, it probably became the best ball in my bag

I've thrown the Cold Blood, and I wasn't really a fan of the reaction. I normally recommend Hammer equipment, but for your particular specifications, I'd go for the acclaimed Mastermind.

The Cold Blood reminds me a lot of the Taboo Blue/Silver, in more than just appearance.  That wasn't a favorite with many around here either.

Not at all. Just going by the history of products made by the Brunswick factory. A month from now these will be selling by the case at fire sale prices.

In no particular order, the top oilers on my list right now would be:

MOTIV Covert Revolt
MOTIV Sigma Tour
Roto Grip - Hyper Cell
Roto Grip - Defiant Soul
Brunswick - Mastermind
Radical - Reax V2
Radical - Reax V2 Pearl
Seismic - Venator
Hammer - Amp
Brunswick - Mastermind Genius

There is more from other companies that I've not really followed right now, look at em all.  Find an intended line that matches what you want to do, read some reviews, watch some videos, talk to a pro shop.

I was getting ready to purchase a mastermind as my oiler, but my pro shop strongly recommended a orange/smoke pyramid chosen path instead. Wow it is the strongest ball have I ever thrown and quite possibly the best ball I have owned, and my arsenal consists of balls from 4 different companies, so I'm not biased to certain brands.

Glad that Pyramid Path matches the condition you are playing on. I've seen all the Paths thrown and was not wowed at all. All were extremely angular, with a ball motion I have seen in whole lot of other pieces. Definitely not THS useable in my neck of the woods.

Go with the Mastermind.....hands down! And I'm a RotoGrip guy!

My vote would be the Hyper Cell, but that's based on having thrown the Cell series before.  Honestly, the Mastermind is the better pick over the Cold Blood.  One of my teammates picked one up 2 weeks ago and it is 1 strong ball.  Easily one of the strongest to date.  Considering how the cover can be tamed, you'll have more versatility overall compared to the Cold Blood.

Definitely the Mastermind.
