Any ex-crankers out there?
« on: October 03, 2004, 12:26:14 PM »
Question for anyone who used to be a cranker, or who regularly hit up on the ball, as to if they had any success changing to a "weaker" release?  Growing up on urethane as I did, I learned the "grip it and rip it" approach to the lanes, but for some reason I am not smart enough to get newer equipment to work for me.  Sure, I can throw a lot of strikes in a set, but I'll also leave around 2 splits of the 4-6-(either 7 or 10) variety per game.  Very, very rarely will I leave a washout - seems I have some phobia about hitting light (even though todays equipment seems to carry light hits better than solid pocket hits).

Anyway, back to topic... I am flirting with less cupping of the wrist, and more of a "stroker" style release to try taming down the reaction (and splits) in my game.  I was wondering if a wrist brace helped you keep your hand out of it?  One of my biggest problems is I'll be going along great, then subconciously I will cup one and plow through the beak for that split.  I know what I've done when I see the ball react, and in many cases I will feel it just before release.  In other words, I will have my wrist straight in my backswing, and as I come forward the wrist will curl under and cup the ball just before I hit up on it in my release.  This aggravates me to no end - is there any hope for my stubborn brain to learn a different release?

I wouldnt say go to a stroker release, but a strong release is still good. Just learn to come out of the ball a little earlier so you dont hit up on it as bad. I have the same type of release, with a lot of hit up on the ball, but Im not a cranker. I like my style personally.

Hey 9~,

I've done exactly what you mentioned.  I used to hit up on it pretty decent but learned over the course of time (like you understand) that the effort is no longer needed to make a ball hook strongly and effectively.  I didn't have to go to a glove to cut back, being smaller in stature, it was fairly easy for me to not have to use muscle(don't have any to begin with) on the shot.

Just trust it bud, as you will see more and more strikes happen without having to work for it, you'll get used to it.  Oh, 2 positives I've gotten from backing off the hit 1) able to move right, not having to cover boards and create more natural angle entry 2)able to use the higher tech equipment.  Most of time I'm be able to out carry the next guy having to throw urethane or a weaker ball and I also don't see as much spottiness downlane because I'm throwing a ball with more surface.  Hope this helps...

9~

If you have a friend with a Mongoose same size.  Try it you maybe surprized that it will keep your hand in a neutral position.  Strap across the fingers doesn't allow you to cup. Striker kind of does same thing but will allow you to raise fingers off of Striker.

I am not anti wrist support.  In fact these days these types of wrist support allow a neutral hand position which is what you want IMO.

Thanks for the input guys... I don't have time to check out the Mongoose before league tomorrow, so it looks like I'll be trying to get out of the ball a little earlier and trust the ball on the light hits.  Can't hurt!

9~, I've been transitioning to crankr to stroker and ball carry is amazing.  Cranking is what we needed for yellow dots and such but the today's equipment...

My coach frequently beats me with a bamboo cane to get me to stop putting ANY muscle in the ball.  It's very difficult to trust the ball, but when I enter the zone and the muscles go lax, the ball carries all.

My suggestion is to use a iron maiden device to straighten the wrist, but then get rid of it when you have the timing and feel.  A wrist strap gives you something to fight against and subsequently uses muscle.

Get a coach/spotter to also beat you when the cranking creeps back into the form.  Takes lots and lots of reps...

Yes, I urinate on my ball...it doesn't give me better reaction or make my hands tougher.  It just makes me feel better.

LOL! I think that's what I need!  I can probably get some of my team-mates to handle that chore, but knowing them, they'd want to use tire-irons instead!

There aren't too many crankers left these days.  The times when we could just yank the bottom of the release like starting a lawn mower are gone.  This release does not allow you to use the high-powered balls at all.  Even the weak balls of today are difficult to control because they also want to jump too much at the breakpoint.  However, I don't think that you have to drop from a cranker to a stroker.

Just learn to tame the release point down.  You can still have a strong hand position coming down, just let it go instead of hitting up at the bottom.  You must still maintain a solid finishing position, but work on setting the ball down earlier and earlier.  Try to get the ball into the lane so quiet that people around you can't even hear it hit the lane.  This will feel like you are dropping the ball, but you can actually get a stronger backend because the ball will store energy longer.  I watch some of the better bowlers around here and am amazed at how quickly their ball leaves their hand.
