Company bowling outing - games/format ideas
« on: January 28, 2016, 02:28:56 PM »
Looking for either games or a tournament format that a bunch of people from my company (that have never bowled) can do when we have our bowling outing in a month. The president came up and asked me for ideas since I'm the only one in the company that's on a bowling league...lol. He wants to introduce some competition and maybe give out a few prizes of some sort.
I immediately thought of teams of some sort with the handicaps figured out later. But a girl that was nearby overheard us and said something later that she wanted to bowl with her boyfriend and not be put on different teams. Which leads to the issue of people (couples/children) etc. being split up which we don't want to do.
I think I've come up with a satisfactory solution... A high/low doubles event where it's all figured out afterwards based on what everyone shot for the night. I can't imagine anyone in the company shooting much more than 600 so we could base the scores off of 90-95% of 200 ave. or something with anyone over 600 getting no handicap obviously and the rest getting whatever the percentage is. High series for the night would be paired with low series, etc.
I think this would work but am I missing something obvious?
If not, does anyone have any other ideas/games/contests/formats that they can suggest?
Thanks,
Digs

Let people be on any team they want, but use the scores for blind doubles.

And if you want them to have a real laugh, have one game of 9 pin no-tap, one of 8 pin no-tap and one game of low-ball.

Or use the Forty Frame Game scoring system.

If there are going to be kids and adults then you need to have some gifts for both.

Make the prizes be door prizes.

How about a No-Tap competition or even a doubles no-tap?

If you want competition, then maybe have it as a side thing for those that want to do it. Maybe break it out in age groups or some sort of level.

In regards to handicap for this competition; 100% of 230 is what you should use. Reminder, these are not league bowlers. 90-95% of 200 is the wrong handicap to use in this type of setting.

Hmmm...100% of 230? But without established averages, isn't that going to basically have everyone end up with the same score? Bowler A bowls 600 and gets 90 pins handicap for a 690. Bowler B bowls a 400 and gets 290 pins handicap. They both end up with the same score....690 with handicap. I can see this working with established handicaps, but this is a one night event.
I like the idea of a no-tap system....might be an idea to see if the center can set up some sort of no-tap system for the night. Maybe incorporate it into the blind hi/lo doubles.

I was thinking you would establish an average with a couple of games 1st. Your method is no different than mine.

Think about it. Whether its 90% or 95% of 200 you might as well use scratch scores, because the results are going to be in the same order. It just gives the illusion that handicap is at play.

Trash heap is right, any handicap system based on scores rolled will end up with all participants having almost the same totals.  I suggest a no-tap system.  Anyone who has ever bowled in league bowls scratch, men bowl 9 pin no-tap, women bowl 8 (or 7) pin no-tap, and children under the age of 16 bowl 7 (or 5) pin no-tap.  --  JohnP

Now that is a great idea.

IMO at a company party, people are there for a good time
adding serious competition is not what most will go for

I would do a raffle that has nothing to do with the bowling

if you do have some that want competition, put them on a pair and do a one game winner gets (x)

also, the casual bowler is usually done after the second game

don't look at this from a serious bowler's perspective, give the group that they want, not what you want

hope it goes well and everyone has fun

Two person teams, bowl Baker style.  Makes it more of a "team effort".
