COMPARISON
« on: December 20, 2003, 11:21:38 AM »
Just in terms of bowling......breaking the U.S. into 3 areas, East-Central-West which area of the country do you think is most INTO bowling?

I am in the east, and have not traveled into the western bowling centers, I have been in the central area and into some centers there. What I get out of the entire thing is that the bowlers in the EAST are a little more serious about bowling.

Maybe I am bias, so lets hear everyone's opinion.

I'd have to say the West. Although there are regional hot spots, I'd guess there is a greater interest in the Northwest and the northern states, due mostly to the weather. Bowling (10 pins) never seem to have caught on in the Northeast, until you reach New York, New Jersey, and PA. (Maine, Mass, Conn, Vermont, NH, RI all seem hotter for skiing or candle pins.)

When snow and rain keep people indoors, bowling seem to attract them (Washington, Oregon, Minnesota, Michigan, northern Ohio, western NY, etc).

The location of ABC tournaments cities being 90% in the West is a constant source of irritaiton for me personally. Except for Syracuse and Knoxville, I have to take 2 airplanes to get there. This year it ain't gonna happen. (Sorry to get off topic.)

I believe Detriot has the largest association of ABC members.  Most northern climate states ahve large memberships ala interest.  Not withstanding states like Texas, California, Florida all have large membership bases.

Well, charltest - not trying to pick a fight in any way, but...
I know the pba regionals are struggling a bit in the northwest.
And women's scratch level bowling in the northwest is DISMAL!!!
The PWBA hasn't had a regional in the Northwest Region for over a year.

No fight even hinted at.

Only Bones brough up Professionals; I don;t think they're approriate in this discussion, but I understand where his argument lies.

I have good friends in Vancouver, Eugene and Salem; all bemoan the lack of scratch leagues. However, their houses almost always seem filled to the brim with all other sorts of leagues.

Here in New Jersey, lots of centers have closed because their land is worth much more when sold to developers for strip malls. Too damned many people.
The remaining centers, if the managers pay the least bit of attention to maintenance, have so many leagues that I can only find open play for practice on SUnday morning (sometimes) and at lunch time between morning and afternoon leagues & business parties.

Still we don't see half the bowlers I hear about in Michigan and have seen the Northwest (in general). I've visited these friends and seen how crowded their centers can be. Of course this is not statistically based by any stretch of the imagination.
