Competitive team averages
« on: October 18, 2008, 03:45:07 AM »
What minimum average do think a team needs to be competitive in your league or just in general?

I was just wondering because in my mixed league (4 bowler teams) in previous seasons. I always felt we didn't just didn't have the team average to be really competitive. We had plenty hdcp. and won our share of games. But just we just couldn't place say in the top 3rd or half of the league.

Now this season I changed one bowler to a higher ave bowler. I and one of my female teammates increased our ave's. And we raised or team ave. from 622 to 695. We lost a bunch of hdcp. but now we're winning and in 2nd place (the 1st place team has a 824 ave)

To me this has shown one thing, having higher averages gave more of a advantage than having more hdcp.

Absolutely higher averages are better than higher handicaps, your handicap is just a percentage of your average(in most leauges anyway).  In almost any league or tournament format the team who has a higher average will win.  Obviously this is not true if people are sandbaggers and shoot a couple 200+ games and then a 130 everynight to keep a 175ish average, but almost always the higher the average team is going to win.  My mens league 5 man team average was almost 1100 and we went to three different houses in three straight years and won the league each year.  If one of the guys has a "bad" night with these kind of averages someone is almost always there to pick him up.

There are usually only 3 ways that a lower average team can compete.

1) The league is 100% handicap
2) The bowlers on the lower average teams are new bowlers and are improving at a high rate
3) The lower average team are a bunch of sandbagging bas-turds

I'd add a 4th way, any team can improve by simply putting forth the effort.  If your stuck in the middle of the pack or bottom and don't like it, do something about it practice, hire a coach, etc...

You don't deserve to be competitive with the best if you don't put for the effort.  The better bowlers are the better bowlers for a reason, they've worked and improved their game.  If you won't make the commitment to improve, or become better, you don't deserve better.

LOL...in my league, honestly, I think for a 4 man team there might be 2 teams above 600.

So, to be competitive (top 3), you only need maybe a 500 team average.
