Drilling-pin position 5+ inches from pap
« on: July 25, 2003, 02:36:32 AM »
I'm drilling up a Time Zone soon, and after talking to Rick Benoit some about the layout, what he recommended was to go with a drilling that put the pin 5+ inches from the pap so that the flare rings would start fairly small and then really open up down the lane as the core starts rotating.  The only problem would be where the cg ends up.  I'd have to put the middle finger hole (right handed) underneath or even to the right of the pin to get it 5 inches from the pap, but I'd like all the holes to stay on the positive side.  Or does it even matter that much as long as the track stays on the left side of both the pin and cg?  Not that familiar with these more specialized drillings, input appreciated.

Lol, I should have given more info.  I have a high track actually, my first flare ring usually is around an inch from my thumb, and about the same from my fingers.  Maybe I'm thinking that 5 inches is longer than it actually is.  I prefer pin above fingers, cg kicked out about two inches.  That would end up at about 5 inches, correct?  I suppose the way Rick was talking made it seem longer.  As it is, I need a pin-cg distance of at least 3 inches.  My boss and I have a ball roll that is almost identical, we like and dislike all the same balls.  Stacked layouts and I never got along except with my old El Nino 2000 and my Shock Trauma.

On a different note, my Viper is drilled about 2 1/2 x 4 or so.  I absolutely love the reaction.  Starts reading a little early, although I attribute that somewhat to the core, but just a nice arc/snap to it.  Sooo, maybe I overthought myself on this again.  I've never measured my pap, admittedly, maybe I'll do that tomorrow.  On a side note of interest, what kind of reaction would this layout produce?

 . . . PIN . . . . . cg
 . . . . . . . . . . . .
 . . .0. .0. . . . . . .
 . . . . . . . . . . . .
 . . . . . . . . . . . .

???  Thanks.

Sounds like your track is about the same area as mine. If I put the pin about 1/2" up from and over the bridge I end up with a pin of about 5 1/2". I have several balls drilled with this position and really like the way they store energy. Better like some snap if the backends are strong. BOth balls I used at the ABC's this year were drilled with the pin in this position with different CG locations.

Great, thanks Tex!  That's my fav drilling too.  I only have that layout on my Viper because I received it already drilled in a trade, thought I'd see what the reaction was like before I plugged it.  Never plugged it, but the pin above fingers, cg out is what I like the best.
