How soon to move up with youth bowler
« on: November 20, 2013, 01:06:35 PM »
My boy is 12 years old and has been bowling for as long as he's been able to.  Lately, he seems to be a little stuck, so I thought I'd try fingertip as an experiment.  I just plugged his older sister's old ball, which is same weight he has now (12 lbs).  I asked his coach to watch him to see if he thought this transition would work.

His coach almost took away his conventional ball and told me not to look back.  He said "highly recommend", but I could see him trying to hide his old ball.  My boy took to this way better than I thought.  He stayed behind the ball better, which gave him better roll and increased ball speed.  It was like he just took 3 steps forward in his progression.  Obviously, we are moving forward with this with great excitement.

I'm old school and am slow to make changes as I'm in this for the long term.  However, I'm now looking at moving him up to 14 lbs in a few months if he doesn't regress a long ways.  He's not a small 12 year old and has been at 12 lbs for a year and a half.  I'm trying to make sure he learns proper technique, but I also want him to be excited and want to learn.

Moving to fingertip has him wanting to bowl every day to get better.  I'm trying to take advantage of this enthusiasm by not waiting too long to increase weight.  I'd like any opinions on how soon to move up in weight considering recent change to fingertip grip.  I'd much rather go to 14 than 13 lbs.

I can't say one way or another which is best (since he has a coach I would say that would be a great source for info), but I can relate what my son is doing fwiw.

My son is also 12. However he only just started bowling in January of this year (age 11). He suddenly got very interested so I got him into the league and picked up his first ball. Went 10 to be conservative; standard grip. Standard grip lasted about a week or two. He had no desire to throw a straight ball and was spinning it. No sense doing the right thing the wrong way so had it redrilled for fingertip. And he has been on a good trajectory ever since.

He also takes lessons (BowelrX....shameful plug), and I would say form wise he's better than me (release not so much). He turned 12 in July and for birthday we moved him up to 12. We (coach, driller, and I) did discuss 13 as possible, but decided to stay conservative not knowing how he'd handle the 20% jump in weight. Well he did great. And his scores continued to improve (nice leap in average actually). So much so that when he won a raffle for any ball of his choice last month, we went 13 and he mixes that in successfully with his arsenal at tournaments. He just bought another ball for light conditions and that is a 13 as well.

So we are taking incremental approach at this point and it's working well. It was a big leap from 10-12 but taking it gradually from here on out. Downside? It's going to be more expensive.  Sure by next summers birthday we will be looking for 14 pounders. But in my view it allows him to maintain consistent approach by making step by step increases in weight. YMMV.

There isn't a "standard" weight recommendation for a 12 year old.  It depends on the individual's weight, strength, and athletic ability.  One way to check is to ask your pro shop to loan you a "buff-a-ball sling".  First put his 12 lb ball in it and have him swing it back and forth.  Then do the same with a 14 lb ball and ask his opinion.  I've found youngsters to be very honest about their ability to handle the extra weight.  --  JohnP

As far as fingertip goes, Tom used to want to wait until boys had went thru most of their growth spurt and the hand had developed most of it's strength. That was generally around 14.

But Justin wanted to go to fingertip around 12 and he relented and because of that several others wanted to go fingertip. He pretty much decided that going earlier wasn't an issue.

In a lot of ways the fingertip grip is easier on the hand because you don't have as much to clear off your hand. The fingertip fit is almost always a superior fit.

As far as weight, we used the various weight measuring balls and looked to see if the shoulder dropped. If not and ball speed wasn't affected to badly then we would go up.

14 makes a big difference in carry much more so than going to 15 or 16. In the hard rubber, plastic days 16 was need but not today.

Do not worry about issues like this.  As a child, just make sure he has fun doing the
activity.  As a former high school baseball coach, I have seen too many talented kids
lose interest because of mental pressures and lack of interest.  Enjoy.  Watch him,
don't necessarily listen to what he tells you, he will most likely tell you what he thinks
you want to hear.  Have fun.  I realize that this answer has no relationship to your original post.

I'll add this.

I believe fingertip fits are more sensitive to span changes than conventional grip. Kids in the 12 to 14 range will often grow so fast that they may need to lengthen their span every 6 months or so with a fingertip fit.

Thanks, I was thinking about every 6 months to have his grip checked.  It shouldn't be much problem to slug/plug a ball to keep proper fit.  My boy has had a few weeks at fingertip and we've had a few bowlers comment on how much better he gets out of the ball.

With Christmas coming, we are likely going to get him 14 lb ball, but not drill until we discuss with his coach and driller.  The way it looks, January-February seem likely.

Randy, I'm old-school like Tommy, but it does look like fingertip was a great move.  The past 2 lessons from Rick have been more productive than the previous 5-6.
