Question/Problem with sub average
« on: March 17, 2005, 11:33:40 AM »
I average only 190 in my league after recovering frm a motorcycle accident in November.  I am starting to throw the ball well but still struggling with corner pins.  Its in a very hard house so it might not be a lot higher then that anyway.

So a guy asked me to sub for him in a house I never bowled league in before.  After bowling league games in this house I came to the conclusion that it is an easy walled up shot with anyone with a little hand and speed.  So I average 231.

Problem is, the guy wants me to continue to bowl for him while he works double shift for some extra money for the next month.  I don't want to book 200+ whatever it is in an easy house.

What do I do? And what is morally correct?

Bowl both if you can...if not hey man there is nothing wrong with bowling on THS. If you do avg 230 or w/e thats fine as long as you're honest with yourself and it's all about how you carry yourself. Just don't act like you're the god of bowling and there is nothing wrong with it. Just don't get sloppy and have fun with it.

Hex,

Thank you for your comment.  I belong to a tournament club that gives 80 % of 200.  So even if I average just 200 there will be zero handicap and only a few with 190 or better.  The real problem is that you can only drop 10 pins a year in average.  So even if I average 220 on this easy shot, it will take three years to get back to the 190 average.  this just to sub in an easy scoring league?

You could do a couple of things:

1) Bowl how you know you can, accept the fact that you'll have to book at a 220/230+ average and bite the bullet if you get 21 games in.

2) Try to use different equipment on this shot that will make it more of a challenge to have a higher average. I know a couple of people this year that are using urethane or plastic on the THS to give themselves more of a challenge.

What is morally correct is to do your best- but I don't think there's anything wrong with doing your best with whatever equipment you chose to use on this shot.

I had this situation a couple of years back.  I was averaging 220, 20 pins over my average, after 6 weeks of subbing.  I told my buddy I couldn't sub anymore because I didn't want my book average to be 220.  He didn't have a problem and found someone else.  There is always someone ready to bowl.

Thank you all.  I just don't think bowling on an easy shot to achieve a real high average is worth anything.  I'd rather average around 200 on a condition that requires skills and knowledge.  After the discussion we had a year or so ago about sandbagging, I didn't want to even get close to 20 games and stopping.  I just don't get what everybody gets wrapped about when bowling high scores on easy walled shots.  I don't think its fair to the bowler.  We don't need sport shots for every league, but some of these walled up shots are out of control even if they are ABC legal.

Windoor.  I use a 14 LB red urethane pearl hammer for most right side spares.  The original red urethane Hammer pearl.
