Lowering backswing
« on: July 19, 2009, 04:35:07 PM »
Hey guys, does anyone out there have something I can practice to help to lower my backswing. Its been high now for about 3 years... and when I say high, i mean... its Mike Fagan high... and that might work for him but I think its time to drop the thing down a bit. I have worked on making sure my upper body doesn't tilt forward causing the armswing to steepen and that has worked to get it down a little, but not nearly enough. Anyone got any tips, or something i can do at the lanes to work on it?

The only thing I know of is to lower the ball in your stance, and/or make sure you aren't helping the ball in the backswing.

I hold the ball about waist high right now, so without going Marshall Holman I dont see how I really can lower it... also I basically just drop the ball into the swing vs. push it away.

I have been doing it so long now that it is very free, I can't even feel it at all, but I watch tape and, wow, its way to high. My rev rate is around 480, but when your throwing it 20mph you'd be surprised how little it really does... don't get me wrong, pin carry is not really an issue, but I think that if I can lower the armswing I can lower the ball speed, and have more control over the ball, also I will have less to worry about with that high armswing (I feel I will pull the ball less).

Keep your right side shoulder (or left if left handed) square and closed to the foul line. Without opening you can never get a backswing that high.

There's a difference between your armswing being free and not being able to feel yourself lifing it.

Why do you want more control of the ball, most of the really good players strive for les control rather than more. More control will probably lead to you pulling the ball more.

I would suggest trying to decrease your waist bend more, and just try to be ultra-conscious about what your arm/shoulder muscles are doing in the backswing. If your armswing is high (and by high, I mean that your ball is higher than your head at any point in the swing) then you are lifting the ball in the backswing. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long as you're lifting it consistently (in terms of direction and speed) and that you're not muscling the ball on the downswing.

I do not doubt that I am not lifting the ball, however what I meant to say is I can not tell you if I am or not, because I flat out dont know. Currently the ball is Fagan-like, as in old PDW... lol, so its high!!

Sorry, what I meant by control is control down lane, being able to control the balls break-point better, basically if I can lower the armswing it will further allow me to slow down, then I will also have the ability to speed back up, that is what I was referring to as far as control.

I think my biggest problem is my shoulders open up so soon, allowing the swing to get up that high. I think if I can work on what golfnut talked about, and close up my shoulders a little I will be able to drop the swing down.

Your first step along with your push away will have a lot to do with how how your armswing will be. If you can youtube some videos of the women bowlers this might help some. I got some good footage of some women bowlers and that definitely helped me. Basically, you are going to follow where ever you push your ball. With that being said, a lot of the women more or less drop the ball as they start. Once the ball drops, walk by your ball. This in turn will create your arm swing. I know it sounds impossible, but it works and it does take some time to not only visualize but practice. There is no force involved, simply dropping the ball and walking by it. After this becomes more natural, you will have significantly lowered your backswing. If you can find a good coach, that would be where I would begin. Someone that can analyze your mechanics and approach. If possible some sort of video analysis would do the trick.

When ever I get a little fast with my feet or bend over too much, this naturally creates a higher back swing. To fix this, all I need to do is relax and make sure my push away is more of a drop and then I will remember to walk by the ball.

Hope this helps some.

Always amazed why people have such trouble with this and those that wish we had back swings cannot be taught it in many cases.
