Why do bowlers have such big egos?
« on: January 21, 2004, 10:42:22 PM »
Unlike alot of sports, we don't play on an even playing field.  In tennis, you either win or lose. Golf, it's your score against par.

Bowling center and the way the lanes are conditioned can make something think they are really good or make them look stupid.

Most THS are designed for players to stand left, crank it up with speed and power and blow pins around like they are nothing.  You don't have to hit a mark, just an area.  Sure some of you will say that a 1/2 board makes a difference but I think it's only your ego talking.

Lets take the Masters this week for example.  I know about a dozen guys who are out there and all of them carry about 220 or so in their home houses and on THS's.  I see where most of them were in the 170 range the first 5 games.  I'm sure the shot is very difficult, but come on.  I don't think many 160 average bowlers entered the tournament, yet I see a ton of guys who were in the 120-150 range.

Bottom line is this, THS's make us think we are better then we are and it's our ego that makes us love to tell people that we've had so many 300's or can average 220.  Average, scores, and games mean nothing at all anymore because we have no idea what the condition is.  If you tell me that you bowl in a "true" sport league and can average 200 for the whole year then I'll give you props.

I saw a guy post that people asked him how he averaged 200. He said it was because he had all this power and that he hit a 3 board area 95% of the time.  If If he could do that, he should be able to win on tour instead of averaging 200 on a THS.

Maybe one of these day we can all play on an even playing surface and we'll know what you are made of.

I've never really cared what anyone thought of my game, as a lefty, if I score it's because of the lanes being easy for lefties.  If I don't score, it's because I can't bowl.  The lefty/righty issue is usually debated by lesser bowlers.  The really good righties recognize when the left side is playing tough or easy and even when they're easy, a good righty knows when a lefty is making good shots or if it's because of the lanes.

I hate when someone asks me what my average is.  I have to tell them something that I don't believe to be true if I tell them my "book" average. I bowl on easy shots and know that if I was bowling on difficult conditions, it wouldn't be close to what it is.

Thank you for reading the Hose's Rant of the Day.

Thanks for all the love.

I feel so much better now.  I think I'll shoot 720 and tell everyone how great I threw the ball.  LOL

I agree 100% with you on this one.  I try to explain this same thing to people and they look at me like they are stupid.

Our local center has sucked for many years.  The owners did not take care of it at all.  Well, a guy with a lot of money and absolutely no knowledge about bowling comes in a buys it.  I was talking to him one day while I was practicing, and he asked me if I bowled league (first he asked me if I was a pro).  I explained to him that I don't bowl in league here because of how crappy it is.  I told him that I bowl in a Travel League that puts out more challenging shots and that I average 190-195 on those shots.  I tried to explain to him that I could probably easily average 205 in his house because of the easy shot and he looked at me funny.  He told me that the shot did not matter, as long as there was oil on the lane.

The bowlers here are absolutely ridiculous.  They think they are great, but they can barely average 195-200 on THS.  The "pro" here averages 210 on THS, but put him somewhere else and he sucks it up.  I bowled a color pin sweeper here a couple of months back, and the regulars were griping about the shot.  I was like, "it's a sweeper for f***s sake!"  None of them seemed to care.  Anyways, I was going to bowl a league here this summer, and I still might bowl a mixed league with my wife, but I will never bowl a regular league here because of how easy it is.

I will stick with the tougher shots and keep my average where it should be.  I know that I am not good enough yet to average 200 on a tough shot, but I am working at it.

The real shame is that some of these 220 wall shot bowlers might be able to become really good, versatile bowlers, if they were given a condition that required shotmaking more than once a year.

You can't really become a "good bowler", bowling on a wall all the time.  You can practice your accuracy, increase your revs, and work on other bowling skills (if you're capable of being honest with yourself), but if you never bowl on an honest condition, you can't really learn to play on one.

A lane manager's jaw just about hit the floor when she was told I wasn't returning the next year because the lane conditions were too easy.  (What's the matter, don't you want to throw a 300?) There have been a large (large!) number of 300's and 800's thrown there this year. I'm still glad I didn't go back.  Tougher conditions, such as PBA pattern E (which isn't truly *that* tough) prevents me from ever having an ego.  Confidence is a must-have though.

Hose,

It is possible that these house bowlers never saw a tough shot or no one gave them a chance to bowl on a true sport condition. If that's the case, this tournament will be either a real eye-opener for them, OR, more likely, they will just shut it out from their brain and never admit to bowling on it.

These are very rough on our ego and sometimes, being human, we can't tolerate the blow. Other times and other people will realize they have something to learn. Then they go and learn it.

And life goes on ...
