Help needed with armswing!
« on: November 23, 2012, 02:38:46 PM »
I have been fighting a issue for many years now with my armswing. After I push off my wrist twists and goes behind my back. I have tried to fix this many times with many different coaches. I'm currently booking around a 210 avg doing this and want to elevate my game and feel that this issue is holding me back.

Does anyone have and tips or drills I can do to fix this problem?

I'll try and see if I can get a video done today on my iPhone and post it. Going in to practice and get some work done on some bowling balls.

Try to be as relaxed as possible and not over push the ball forward causing muscle

The simplest thing I see is you push the ball right as you walk left...the ball has to go behind you. Try pushing the ball left and not over pushing it and don't push it up, let it fall towards the ground plus letting it swing freely from your shoulder

Try a one step drill, and just focus on allowing your arm to swing freely. You appear to muscling your swing a bit.

Thank you for the advice, I will try both recommended tips/practice drills next time I hit the lanes to practice. I've always had problems muscling my swing.

your swing path and swing direction will never be correct until you fix your footwork. you must learn to walk a straighter path first (one foot in front of the other) and that will fix a lot of the swing problem.

I agree with what sps300 said.  Watching the video, the footwork seems to be the biggest issue, which will screw up timing and can screw up the swing.  Here is what I would do:

1) Definitely use the 1 step swing drill that was already mentioned.  This will help you become more relaxed throughout all parts of the swing.  If you muscle the ball, it will hurt consistency.  I do this drill from time to time if I run into a slump or if I notice any issues with my swing being off.  It was one of the first things my driller/coach worked with me on 2 years ago and it definitely does help.

2) Practice with the footwork.  The thing I noticed is you have a huge drift left when going into the 1st/second steps.  I would practice walking straight.  I think the footwork issue is causing your swing to go behind the back, which is one of the reasons the swing is being thrown off.  If the footwork can be corrected, then that will help you with the swing/timing.

Footwork is dictated by direction of armswing...armswing going right forces him to walk left, if push away goes straight in front of or slightly left, ball swings under shoulder and chin...walking straight btw is a misperception...as long as the ball swings freely from the shoulder and under the chin, the bowler will walk slightly left as the bowler is staying more centered...

I actually started really watching the video I made over and over and noticed my first step goes to the right then I start walking left on 2nd step. At the end point at my slide I end up with no drift from my start point. What can that step to the right cause?

Your body has a natural centering component which translates trying to keep your legs or weight under you...if you push the ball to the right or away from your true center, your body's natural tendency will to follow it as it is heavy and swinging so if your legs didn't follow the bowling ball, you'd fall over. Pay attention to the swing direction more so than what your footsteps are...

In your 5-Step approach, your first step should be straight ahead, with your second step (first step in a 4-step approach) should be in front of your left foot.  You also need to work on your timing,  Your ball seems to be in ahead of your feet.  You swing should be at sholder height when you start your slide.  Is your ball too light?  What weight is your ball?  You seem to be able to muscle it around very easily.

My ball weight is 15lbs. I'm 6'1 260 so I don't think 16lbs would make a difference, I threw 16lbs when I was a youth bowler though.
