Pin and weight on Urethane Groove
« on: June 16, 2010, 10:17:58 AM »
I just got to thinking after seeing pictures of my old Urethane Groove that cracked over winter. I finished it off with a swazall after the crack opened up. What I saw wasn't what I expected.
Seems to me the pancake core is at the wrong end. Am I seeing something wrong??

If it is would that explain why the ball always rolled over the thumb hole ??

Here's the picture from the ad for the ball. Notice the core at the pin.

Here's the actual ball. Notice where the core actually is.

Heres where it put the core in relation to my grip, drilled according to pin placement.

Am I crazy here??? I'll leave it to the experts.

It looks wrong to me as well.  However that being said, that pancake is supposed to be the top weight and if your ball driller did his job correctly, he should have been able to tell something was wrong when he placed the ball on the dodo scale BEFORE he drilled into it to double check the top weight on the box. He probably would have found that the ball was marked incorrectly.

I've seen several balls labeled on the box that they are 13lbs when they are barely 12lbs.  Top weights being off, CG being off (marked wrong).

Yes, that''s probably why it thumped over the thumb hole.

and, sorry, but,
yes, I agree with 36RED that the driller should have weighed it to find the CG BEFORE doing anything else, and then told you where it was and marked it.

While static weights are almost meaningless when drilling dynamic cored balls, they are VERY important when drilling pancake cored balls IF you are concerned about ball reaction.

He didn't weigh this one. Just went off of the pin placement and CG mark(?). I wanted it for a spare ball. Something to use just above plastic.

Thanks, I thought I was seeing things right.

That's probably where the cg was...it doesn't necessarily go right under the pancake.  The ball is 3 piece and it doesn't really matter how it's drilled.  You can drill it with the pin on the bottom of the ball and it will roll the same.  It probably hit the thumb because you track high, and non dynamic balls exagerate flaws in your ball roll.
