Is there a simple rule of thumb basis for judging a ball''s core or is there a place (website) where the characteristics of different cores are explained?
When I read the desriptions of different coverstocks I understand the terminology. But knowing that one ball has a Dual core and another has a two-piece core, doesn''t really tell me much
And in the real world, I have my opinion of which balls in my arsenal have strong cores based on how hard they appear to hit the pins, but that''s very subjective and was wondering if there is a more objective way to evaluate both new balls and older ones.
For example.... I''ll list several of the balls that I own, and my impression of the strength of their cores:
Storm Trauma Recovery = weak as hell
Brunswick Command Zone = relatively strong
Storm Jolt Pearl = fairly weak
Hammer Raw Anger = strong
Storm Virtual Gravity = strong
Storm Triple X Factor and Storm Xtreme = strong
Track 607A = Strong
Ebonite Raid = medium/strong
Brunswick Black Diamond (1970''s rubber ball) = strong
Hammer Clear (plastic ball with spider) = weak
These are just my opinion based on my impression of the balls effect on the pins when I''ve thrown what appears to be a decent shot.
What prompted my question was the behavior of the Storm Jolt Pearl. Sometimes can bowl lights out with this ball....rolling several strings of solid strikes, and other times it hits the pocket and it''s as if I am throwing plastic (lots of deflection and splits and corner pins).
Operator error is surely a factor, but I know that when I am throwing one of the balls that I believe to have a strong core, that even the poorly thrown shots seem to have less deflection and more drive through the pin deck.
Anyway... was just curious if there is a way to compare cores.

I am curious as to how you isolated the core from the coverstock to make your strength determination?

That is not an effective way to judge weight blocks. For example: Black Diamomd and Hammer Clear basically have the same weight block. The particular weight block in those balls has very little influence on the shot thrown. There apparent strength or weakness seen by you has more to do on how you are getting the ball to roll at the pins more than anything the weight block is doing.

Worry more about the cover first and the balls intended purpose and core much less.
The companies today do a great job of matching cores and covers to work well with each other. Plus the core numbers will change after holes are put in the ball.
