What will really burn you is when you are averaging 200's
and you get beat by a straight baller, that bowls twice a year

Bones -

I understand what you're saying.  I liken it to golf where is doesn't matter how you score, just what the score is.  What's really burning my butt is I'm trying to learn the nuances of the game, to make the adjustments based on conditions and to work on my spare skills.  Why do all that when I could just get up there and wing 'er on down the lane and make my score????

My biggest problem is as the lanes dry out, I can't find the right line to play.  Last week I tried to tone down the hook, but it kept going left on me anyway.  Last night, I tried moving left and I ended up almost against the ball return throwing between 3 and 4 arrow and it was still hitting the head pin too hard.  I really think my Truck is just a little too hooky for these conditions and am thinking about a Roto Sonic X for the Wednesday night toast....

"That's why PBA qualifiers are 9 game blocks. You can't always get an accurate account of someone's ability after 1, 2, and even 3 games sometimes" Tell this to my scratch team. we seem to get everybody and there brother start stringing strikes. Just last week I watched a guy shoot 720 on a 171 average. He hit the pocket 3 time on the rightside the whole next. The rest where throught the nose a runaway brooklyn. Our anchor bowler smashes the pocket 32 out of 36 times he shoots a nice 612 series. He left so many single pins and pocket splits it was funny. He was high man on my team. This night I left 2 pocket 8-10's, 4 seven pins, 2 nines, one eight pin, 4 tens, and 3 seven-ten splits. all on pocket hits. I moved line I started around 20-10 and within three balls was as deep as 35 laying down around 20 crossing out to 8. This guy was throwing right up 5 about 18 mph. I even tired his line. 2 of the 7-10 splits. Ohh well I just sucked tonight. I just grow tired of watching ppl who can't seem to find the pocket with two hands and a flash light luck out every week while I smash the hole only to lose to someone he seems to have luck on there side.

I agree, it is aggravating when that happens.  However, I must ask, you don't really think a shot that leaves a 6-10 or 3-10 was a good ball that deserved a strike do you?  The 7, 10, and 8-10 are usually left when you are in the pocket, but the other 2 are usually results of being too high and nearly on the nose - esp. in the case of the 3-10.

Anyhow, enough of that... Try getting some weaker equipment and play in the oil.  Eventually you will find something weak enough that will match up to your style and the way the lanes are set up in your area.  Good luck!

Nollster,
Though this may not completely convince you to throw a good hook, it certainly shows the merits of having a consistent shot and not relying on lousy shots.  THis guy came into my league as a sub, and the first night he was there, with a house ball mind you, shot a 658.  That is freegin incredible for a straight bowler.

After gloating a fair amount and making everyone else who actually OWNED bowling balls and shoes feel like crap, he went home.  This Tuesday was his fourth week in league, and he didn't strike til the 6th frame of the 3rd game.  Yeah, he's going like -150 for the night.

Do not be scared off into throwing straight, it is just not as satisfying.

There's no way I'm giving up on the hook -- I've always hooked the ball and can't seem to throw it straight (which is just killing my spares!!).  Even when moving my hand more to the side and breaking my wrist, I always seem to panic at the bottom and try to rip it around some.  I'm also thinking that since I started working out again, I'm starting to get stronger and I may be getting a little more torque-age on the ball.  What makes last night tolerable was that it was one of my best friends and my bro-in-law and I pretty much spank them at everything else we do.  I know they loved seeing me getting scrooged!!  Gimme another month or so and they won't get close to me!!

this is what i think happened....

straight player plays up the middle with a plastic ball, nollister plays pretty deep inside, playing the big hook. straight player burns the heads in the middle parts of the lane and creates hang on a part of Nollister's line.

Straight player keeps his line, nollister kept playing the same area as the straight player, and straight player burns out his line. Ahhh!

i say nollister should have taken out the hand a little and played up the boards where the straight player wasn't even close to playing - possibly the twig area.

Watch your opponent where they are playing during the practice times... especially if your match play goes for about 3-5 games or more. by seeing where they play you can possibly see where the oil will migrate down the lane.

but thats just what i think.
