Title: Cost to drill your own equipment?

What's the cheapest drill press I can buy to start drilling my own equipment?

What do I need to look for when buying a drill press for bowling ball drilling?  Can I get a drill press from HOME DEPOT or other hardware stores?  

I don't want to open a pro shop.  I'm just thinking of drilling my own equipment and would like to know how much it would cost.

Plan on spending a minimum of $1000-$1500 bucks for everything you will need to layout, weigh and drill your own stuff..  The drill press is something you cannot go cheap on.. A ball jig is also expensive. You then need a scale, sander and all the supplies needed to lay the ball out...

You MIGHT be able to find some stuff used on ebay, but used pro shop stuf always brings top dollar there.. It might take some time to get all of the stuff you need, but I have seen it all on ebay..

you can get one from hardware stores, just need one with a 4-5" quill travel.  otherwise you would have to remove the ball each time to change out bits.  i bought a 12" craftsman press from sears for 100 bucks on clearance..  it has a 3 1/2" quill travel.  had to modify the base of the press to rais the jig up otherwise i wouldnt of been able to drill the holes deep enough.  i drill all 3 or more holes without removing ball.  shop around you can find good deals.  took me months to find the stuff i needed, but was well worth it.

You kind of have to luck into it, but I know a couple people that have bought the whole set up from places like Kmart when the stores close.  The liquidate a lot of the fixtures and equipment.  

For the amount of drilling one person would do, I think you can get by with a drill press that costs around $300-500, you don't want to go too cheap, because what's the point of having to buy $200 press 3 times?  Then you have to buy a jig as well and that's gonna run you another $300+

yes i am.  martial arts was what i was into big time, until i got married and she fed me well to fatten me up.  now i am too old and fat to be jumping around.

Best bet is to keep an eye on ebay.  Since most are sold as local pickup you are only competing against those around you (or those willing to make the drive).

I got my drilling setup on ebay for around $500 - drill, jig, drill bits, and other misc stuff.  Of course I drove 10 hours each way to get it - $150-200 for gas and another $100 for hotel.

Paid another $250 for misc tools (bevel sanders, quarter scales, rasps, knives, insert pullers, router shield, etc) in another ebay auction.

Kaufman scale was another $600-700 from ebay.

Spinner was $200.

Another $200 sandpaper, cleaners, polishes and other surface adjustment materials.

Add in another $200 for ball plug and color kit and other supplies (cups, stir sticks, dams, etc).

It can start to get expensive after a while.  I will say that it is somewhat enjoyable - but by no means easy!  I have a new found respect for quality pro shop guys and their craft.  

I have no desire to open my own shop or drill for other people - I just like to be able to drill my own stuff, experiment with different pitches (not necessarily a good thing!) and layouts.

Thanks for the info guys, I really appreciate it.  

I just think it's wise for me to start drilling my own equipment.  I plan on bowling for a long time to come and the cost of bwoling balls wouldn't be bad if I could drill my own equipment.
