Just got my first shipment of Magic Carpet
« on: October 22, 2008, 01:24:57 AM »
And can't wait to try it tonight.  Didn't have time to tinker with it last night.

What should I expect?  I've been a "tape guy" for as long as I can remember and am not apprehensive, but more unsure of the feel/performance....well, you get the idea.

My current thumbhole has 3 pieces of white tape stacked on top of each other.  Magic Carpet feels significantly thicker than the 3 pieces of tape.  Should I go red side up or blank side up?  I'm thinking to go blank side up, since I have a tendency to drop the ball sometimes.

What have you Carpet users out there experienced? Any feedback and help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had good luck with Magic Carpet in the past, and have just started using it again.  I have found that I get a better release if I put the rounded end at the top instead of the square end.  Try both to see what works for you.  If you are going to use it, I'd recommend that you put it in all of the balls that you use, instead of some with and some without.  In my Saturday night league, after using a Magic Carpet ball for the first two games and bowling great, I switched balls and had problems getting a good release with my normally reliable and best fitting ball that did not have Magic Carpet in it.  It felt like the thumb hole was now too big and I had to grab the ball which killed my release.  Just food for thought.

Due to the way the carpet lays, with the rounded end down you will get a slower release and with the rounded end up you will get a quicker release.

Both ends are round now, at least they were in my last shipment.  Still the same 'grain' though, you just have to look close to see which side is with the grain, and which is against.

I have it one ball and it works pretty good, the thumb hole is way too big without it, more than 3 pieces of tape. You might have to open the thumb up more.

It is supposed to be the equivalent of 4 pieces. You'll probably still use white tape along with it though. Especially as the carpet wears down and loses it's firmness. I'm cheap, so I squeeze all the time I can out of them and only replace when I hot water bathe my equipment.

I have just started using the Carpet. I have always squeezed the ball due to being drilled reverse for years(now1/4 fwd)While its too early to tell it seems to allow me to not squeeze. The trick will be to set it up so I don't need to adjust during the game as my thumb acts up. One tip so far:when I first put it in it seemed too tight, BUT i found that I was able to come out much better than before. If you want further updates contact me. One more thing, according to the instructions the red mark on the carpet should be up for faster release and down for slower release. I seem to prefer it up.

Update

I used Magic Carpet for the first time last night and was quite happy with the feel and the results.  Although the thumb hole felt really tight, I threw my warm ups at 1/4 speed.  Every release was clean [red side up].  I figured I'd be OK for league with the Carpet in the thumb hole.

I have to say, I was impressed with the product.

The 765 was just a bonus!!
