Not me, but someone I work with started bowling this year. He has a 16 pound ball, drilled for him (it was given to him) He has no mechanics whatsoever.
The guy that started him out is around a 200 average bowler. I know he started early in youth, and throws a decent ball. He contends that this new guys mechanics will come around eventually. I think he needs a lighter ball to start out with. He is lefty. I am a righty or I would give him one of mine. He wants a new ball drilled. I hate to put him in something that is all beat up and plugged up. Tonight he finally asked to use a 14 pounder. His mechanics still suck, but he said to me tonight I felt better throwing the 14 pounder.
This other guy says ball weight does not matter. He needs to work on everything with the 16 pounder. I say it will be easier for him to do something right with a lighter ball. Get him a decent release with a lighter ball. I am not claiming to be the messiah here but I know I would not have taken so much time if I had started and learned the right way, and not the wrong way. I have not worked with him as of yet, and keep bugging him to show up earlier and I can work with him for a bit before league. Need some simple advice to give him. I did teach my exwife to bowl, she was around a 170 average bowler when she stopped. I bought her a big hook monster of a ball so when she did throw it right it looked awesome to her. I want this guy to do the same, maybe not the big time hooker but something with some movement on it so he can see when he does it right. he is still coming out of the ball straight up the back of the ball and most times his thumb and fingers come out at the same time, he is crossing his hand over in front of his body to try and make the ball hook, but it does nothing because he is not releasing it right. Give me some easy pointer to give him.
I know his thumb needs to exit first, to create hook. he needs to firm up his wrist. and he needs to "shake hands" instead of palm up. He can hit his mark with a straight ball. but when he "hooks" it, because of the crossover of his hand to his body he throws it right everytime..
I will print this out and let him look at it when I get some good responses.
