Cracked Skin
« on: March 25, 2009, 09:52:15 AM »
It's really irritating. Cracked skin on my middle finger at the first joint and on the back on my thumb.

I've used the Master Skin patch and it worked well, until the liquid dried up lol

I've heard using clear nail polish works the same, but haven't tried. Super Glue was also recommended to me, but not too sure about toxins in the glue. New Skin works for healing, but doesn't hold up once I bowl.

Anyone have some other recommendations?

ps: I don't like bowling tape. I never get a clean release with tape.

I have dry skin and cracks happen on my thumb all the time. They heal but then I bowl and it starts all over. What I found works for me:

After I get home, I put neosporen (sp) on the crack and leave a band aid on it over night. Take the band aid off after the second day and it seems to be better.

If it cracks open during bowling I have used everything you mentioned and the only thing that stops the cracking is super glue, very small drop on each side of the crack, NOT in it.

Nexcare makes a Skin Crack Care that you brush on but it won't hold up for more than one game. Nue Skin the same, won't hold up and clear nail polish works but burns like ...well, you understand.

Last option I have tried and it's a pure pain but the dry skin went away for a long time was to put skin lotion on at night and cheap plastic gloves on while I slept. That lasted a couple nights because I can't stand crap like that on my hand, the glove.

All I can say, Good Luck and DO NOT put the super glue into the crack, only on the ends so it won't crack more.

While I have used it occasionally, and others have used it quite often, super glue MAY help. Eveyone's body could react different to it's use.

All I can say is to try it sparingly and see if you develop any issues. Here is a link to some additional information. Good luck.

Lay down a layer of New Skin and while it's still wet apply a very thin layer of cotton over it.  Let that dry then apply another layer of New Skin over the cotton.  Let it thoroughly dry before bowling and it will last at least 3 games.  --  JohnP

This works well, if you have the patches that come with some brands of New Skin make sure you use them, it works almost like fiberglass. I have done this before when I was dealing with issues of dry skin, I don't seem to have trouble anymore and when I do I just use some lotion and i'm fine.

I have a similar problem with my middle finger. If it's bad, I start with Roger's solution. This works. Keep it on as long as possible.

Next, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

1. Stop using rosin bag to dry your hand. It dries out your skin. That's one thing that makes it crack. Use a towel instead. It's hard to hold onto to the ball with blood in the finger holes.

2. Once healed, get some Aloe Vera gel and vitamin E oil, or some hand cream with both of these in it. These will heal the drying skin problem. If you work with your hands, like a cement mason, you'd be using this stuff already. I've recommended this to a professional gardner who bowls and it's the only stuff that stopped his fingers from bleeding all the time.

I get cracks on my middle finger as well. It usually happens during the winter when it's drier out.

Super Glue seems to work the best for me while I'm bowling.

IMO this is priceless information. A friend told me about Vitamin E and said to buy the gel caps and break one open and put the gel on the crack. The first time I tried it, it healed up completely in 24-48 hours. Once you're healed up hand cream is good preventative maintenance. Since using hand cream I rarely get cracks anymore.

If you prefer Super Glue, use it with cotton as I described in my earlier post.  --  JohnP

Awesomeness people!

I have some cotton and patches left from my dehydrated Master's Skin Patch kit. I'll give that a try! I will also look into the prevention by using oils and moisturizers.

Superglue works for me.  I buy the paint on kind.  As far as dry skin, try making sure you keep your hands moisturized outside of bowling.  That helps a bit.
