i started asking this question to myself, if a person is a cranker or high rev and speed challenged which has to play very deep on the lanes, which is better?
start in front of the ball return like we see on TV or walk left, a good example would be osku palerma, he has a exaggerated approach to the left

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment
When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

Some guys can't or don't stand in front of the ball return because it shortens their steps & messes with timing... so they walk left to get in front & then throw it right. I believe that is the reason they didn't start there to begin with.
Wouldn't say one way is better than another. It's whatever feels more comfortable.

Measure with your shoulder instead of your feet and then you will always know where you are on the lanes..

If your unable to generate enough speed in front of the return then your not really going to benefit much from being there. It would be better to stand next to the ball return and lengthen your approach to help generate more speed and loft as needed to get the ball where your aiming.
