Cranker looking for ball recommendations
« on: May 08, 2005, 08:00:06 AM »
I've been out of the game for a few years now. I'm looking to buy a new ball just to open bowl with for fun. With so many different choices on the market today, I'm overwhelmed and don't even know where to begin!

I travel constantly for work so unfortunately I cannot league bowl. Since I will bowling strictly in open bowling conditions, I can't predict how the lanes will be from visit to visit, house to house. This will probably complicate the selection process, but I anticipate being able to overcome anything that's not drastically oily or dry with speed changes.

I throw 3/4 roll, slightly above average speed, above average loft, and I'd guess 18-20 revs. Some of my previous balls have been a pearl Pirhana, a Nuke, a trusty urethane Cobra, and a pearl Blue Hammer (yes it's been THAT long). I'm a righty and usually stand left of the center arrow, throwing a line that crosses the center arrow down to between first and second arrows. I'd prefer something with some backend to it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

drill a hammer hi rev and and a morich ravage and you will be able to open up the lane with both balls, open the lane up with heavier volumes with the high rev and open the lane with medium to medium dry volumes with the ravage.

Based on the numbers the Hi Rev is a HOOOOK monster.  Solid reactive coverstock as well, it looks like a good ball though.

I would just stick to midpriced balls, something liek the Nemesis from Brunswick, or the Heat from Track, i can see either one of those two balls seing alot of play in open bowling conditions.

If you are facing more oil, the Absolute Inferno is a strong ball - but it tends to roll soon. On dry lanes, you will get into difficulties, I think. If you can still get one, the Original Inferno or the Zone Classic, with a slightly tamer coverstock, could prove more versatile on dryer conditions.

Another great ball IMHO for medium and up ist the new Xxcel - lighgt particle load, but very clean through the front. If you play fast and with revs, this ball with a late recation setup should be a very good all-around ball, either with its 1.000 grit box finish or some more shine to it for less oil.

Hope this helps?

8 recommendations...looks like I have some researching to do...! I'm tempted to walk into the pro shop with a blindfold on and buy the first thing I touch.
