What works well on short patterns?
« on: June 08, 2006, 01:21:31 AM »
I'm going to the Hoinke next month to bowl in a couple squads.  I've been there before and had a hard time with transitions because the oil moves so fast.  From what everyone says it's a short pattern, like 30ft, with an OOB outside of 10.  Not sure on the volume, but it plays almost like a reverse block.

Last year I took dull stuff, and did alright.  This year I switched over to pearls for league and averaged my highest in a few years.  But my THS is nothing like the shot out there.  Suggestions?

With a pattern like that, i'd either throw plastic from inside or go play the OB with something strong.

Soemthing with a med to high RG, not too much differential, drilled rather weak (pin at 5 1/2" from PAP or more). I have a house that has a league with such a pattern, and it is awful to play with a sound release... anything hooks away.

A friend of mine set up a Power Groove pearl with the pattern 4E for theis (pin under middle finger!), and the ball still has a killer back end for him. I am currently experimenting with a black Pure Hammer, but the low RG core proved to make this one a hook monster that can only be kept on the lane through speed...

If you are an exact player, you might consider Brunswick's Urethane Groove. Has no core, does not roll, but "works" when you have some hand.

I bowled the hoinke this year already.  They oil the lanes in the morning and then again at 3pm.  The 30ft pattern is just what they layout at 3pm.  It's laid over the first pattern which is a 42' med oil pattern.  I also found that the OOB was not that bad and was not from 10 to the gutter it was more like 5 to the gutter.

Getting to the pocket was not bad at all it was carrying the shots thatv was tough.  I ended up using a Raw Hammer Doom that was drilled stacked leverage and cover changed to a matte finish.  I was playing around the 3rd arrow out to about 8-10 and was doing well from that line.

I started using my Doom that was drilled with the pin above the bridge and cg kicked right but the back end was too much on these dry back ends.  So I would use balls that grab in the mid lane and less on the back end.  That was key for me.

Try a Hammer "Pure Hammer" drilled to go long.

For me, nothing works well on shorter patterns.  I fight over reaction most of the time...  My best sucess has been with mild pearl equipment with tame layouts.  I prefer around 6" pin to PAP distances above the fingers...  As far as equipment, I have an older Optyx Illusion which is fairly mild...  I tend to like the "older" milder resin equipment, but you could probably use one of the "dry lane" balls out there... Power groove Dry-R, Jinx, Crisis Pearl, Bullet, Desert Heat, etc, etc.. depending on the company you like...

Thanks chitown!  All I heard was the re-oil at 3pm being 30', so I assumed that was the shot they were laying down.  42' is longer than my league shot was, which is good because I am constantly moving left from the 5th frame on.  If your Doom worked well for you, my Hot Rod SS pearl should react similar.  I've also got a ragin banshee that is drilled weaker that should be good if the backends are squeaky.  Both are realatively short pin-pap drills though, 3x3 on the HRSSP, and 4x5 on the ragin.

I was thinking of picking up a Fired up or Agent and drilling it with a longer pin.

No prob!  I found out how long the pattern in the morning was when I talked to the lane guy.  He told me what it was.  While we were talking some guy shot a 300 on lanes 1 and 2.  He was playing the 3rd arrow to about 8-10.

The 3rd arrow to 8-10 is the shot on the fresh conditions.  In fact if you can change balls and stay in that area you will score.

I started using my box condtion Doom which is drilled with the pin above the bridge and cg kicked right and no balance hole.  Well this ball was put back into the bag after the first couple of sets because the back ends were over reacting.  I ended up scoring my best using my stacked leverage Doom which has the pin high and the balance hole 1" past my pap.  I also have the cover polished with Ebonites matte polish.  Before the matte polish the ball was dulled to knock off the box cover.

I found that the stacked leverage Doom provided more mid lane and less back end and the cover change smoothed the break point.  This gave me a very controlled but strong reaction.  I carried a lot of shots with this ball.

The hoinke pattern is not hard to get to the pocket.  It's the carry that's tuff.

When they put out the 30 ft re-oil it will last no more than 2 sets.

This is what I suggest and is only my opinion.  Don't bowl the 8pm night slot.  The lanes are so fried by then it's a waste of money.  5:30 may also be a waste depending on if the lanes were bowled on and by whom.

For the Hoinke I preferred a ball that had less back end and more mid lane.  I was able to keep my ball speed fast and carry well.  I also found that I was able to stand in the same spot and use the same target for about 5 frames.  After that I had to move every 3 to 5 frames with my feet and target.

Also don't hesitate changing to another ball if yours is not working.  I wish I would have done that in the begining.

Good luck bud and score high!
