A new scratch league
« on: February 09, 2005, 11:11:00 PM »
Ok here goes.

I have been complaining to the owner of the local center for
the past 5 years that he needed to start a "tougher" condition
scratch league that was a early shift.  This past week he came to me
and told me he had 8 lanes that I could have next year due to
a league dropping out.  Below is a list of what I have come up
with for this league.  Look it over and jot me a line and let me
know of anything that you feel could be added or removed to make
this league better.  The owner said he was willing to put down
any shot I want but he was not willing to pursue sport league sanctioning
and he wasn't willing to change the shot every week so I would have to pick
a condition and stick with it.

3 man teams
4 games across 4 pair of lanes  (every team would bowl on every pair)
tougher lane conditions (I am thinking the us open pattern 40 feet flat)
scratch
No avg. cap
Sanctioned abc league not sport league
Head to head point system 1 point for beating your man and one point for winning
the game.  That is 4 points per game and 1 point for team series.  17 points total per night.
600.00 added to the prize fund by the house.
50.00 per team sponser fee per team added to prize fund
cost per night?? approx $22.00-$25.00

I agree, I think you need a cap.  Our league has a 625 cap and there really isn't a dominant team.

Our scoring is 2 pts head to head, 2 pts each game, 3 pts each series, and 3 pts total wood for 36 total points.

How are lineups going to be set?  That was an issue for some people this year..we used to go low-high average, but that was changed.

Putting a cap on any league was a good idea until people started to sandbag.  If you have a trio league and cap the teams at 660, the team that is winning and with a few weeks left is averaging 661 all of a sudden, then they will throw off so they can bowl the next season together.  We want people to bowl the best they can, not bowl poorly to be competitive in the future.

I love the draft idea, espeically with an 8-team league.  Shouldn't be too complicated.

Added prize money into the prize fund is very important as well.  If you're shooting to get the cream of the crop, then you'll want to put a lot of money on top to lure them in.  If this is going to be more of a laid back atmosphere for people to learn in, then charge $10/week and have no or very little prize fund and don't worry about sponsors.

To make the league credible it needs to be sanctioned.  There is virtually no added work for the center other than having to reoil if their machine isn't putting out a legit shot.

The fact that the owner of the joint refuses to change shots tells us a lot about the state of bowling today and why it is where it is.  It sounds like you are a person that wants to recruit bowlers for this person's bowling center to buy beer from them, pay their lineage, pay for food, and do whatever else, and he comes back to you with several restrictions.  Sounds like a brilliant businessperson to me!

I'd imagine if you had rosters for 40 bowlers (8 5-man teams) that he'd change his tune quickly.  Lazy people deserve to go out of business.

If the goal is to have good competition for the sake of good competition, spread the money pretty evenly across. Maybe only pay place money and no point money, especially with only 8 teams tops, and keep the top to bottom payouts fairly close so that the bowlers who don't think they have a chance aren't scared away by thinking that it's a huge money loser for them. In other words, don't make a huge first place payout that scares away everyone but the most stacked team.
