Creativity Time
« on: September 20, 2004, 06:39:43 AM »
I keep hearing on here how we need to attract new people to our sport, so here is my challenge to you.  And I DON'T want to hear any negative thoughts about how "it'll never happen" or "that's a bad idea".  This thread is a place for creativity.  One topic per post please, but feel free to post multiple times.

Thanks!

"Family Feud" league... Mom, Dad, and a sibling.  3 person teams (maybe 4 if you want to go with 2 siblings), non-smoking, maybe throw in food and a drink with bowling fees. Probably 12 week league.

I'll start with an idea that I've discussed in another post...

I think beginning bowler clubs would be awesome!  Maybe like an 8-week session that meets every Monday at 9:30pm, anybody is welcome.  During those 8 weeks, the new bowlers could learn etiquette, fundamentals, and possibly stuff about the industry too and some history.

This idea has so many possibilities and benefits.  You could invite some of the area's better bowlers out to help teach/coach, perhaps somebody different each week.  Pay them with free games or money that comes out of the weekly fees that the new bowlers pay.  This should help change the attitudes the "regular" bowlers have, and will help assimilate the new bowlers into our more competitive leagues.

Charge very reasonable prices for such a club, like perhaps $10/week which gets them 3 games plus instruction and the rest of the stuff.  Perhaps pair up each bowler with one of the coaches and have a little fun tourney at the end of the season, almost like a pro am.

Limit the # of bowlers per session to make sure each person gets the proper amount of attention.

I think an incentive plan would also be a good way to recruit new bowlers.  Offer your bowlers incentives for starting new leagues or recruiting new bowlers.

Example:  Start a league with 30 bowlers, and get free bowling in the league all season and a new bowling ball.

Example 2:  Get 3 free games for every new bowler you recruit into league bowling.

Etc.

One house here has the Bad Bowlers' Club.  No one above 140 is allowed to join, since they're there to learn the game.  I thought it would be fun one night to just show up and watch.  I'm sure we can all remember when we were new at the sport just how thrilling throwing your first turkey was

How bout some scotch doubles leagues.  Where you throw the first shot then your partner throws at your spare and so on then you alternate.  I have done this once in a adult child tournament and it was lots of fun.  Not sure on all the ins and outs of forming this type of league but I think it would be fun it it could be done.

Not sure whats is called but another idea I have liked for local leagues would be have five man teams and each bowler is responsible for one frame, then the next bowler and so on.  So the whole teams bowls one game at a time.  I saw this on T.V. I think it was the MCAA womens bowling or something I don't know what this format is called.  Definitely puts the emphasis on the whole team though.
