Custom Made Thumb Molds
« on: February 11, 2008, 03:23:30 PM »
How many of you use a custom made thumb molded for your balls and how well do they work? I am taking a ball in to Anne Marie Duggan tomorrow that has my favorite thumb hole and she is going to make a mold of it and then try a molded thumb in one of my balls.

My only worry here is getting the lateral part of the hole in the right place in the ball each time as well as having the pitch right.

I get mine from Buddies. From them they mark the bottom of the slug with a line and match it to a line scribed at the center of the bottom of the hole. The pitches are not part of the thumb mold. They drill the pitches into the hole the mold goes in. Never had a problem.

I do.

A lot of people do around here, especially those with oblong shaped thumbs. Best way to go IMO.

I use them.  They are great, every ball feels exactly the same.  I highly
recommend them.

I have one thumb that I love. I've never been able to duplicate the feel in any of my other balls and I've replaced more thumb slugs than I can count trying to duplicate it. Today I was in Anne Marie's shop and Mike Austin was in there. I was talking to him about my hand and ball fit. He suggested I try it. I didn't know that Anne Marie made these molds. I will take my ball with my "perfect" thumb into her shop after league tomorrow afternoon for her to make a mold and Install it into one my experiment balls in a couple days and see how it works.

Nick, is it hard to line up the molds in the thumb hole to get the pitches and lateral part of the thumb positioned right?

Nope, once she notches the back-center of the thumb, it's all clockwork from there.

I have been using molded thumbs for the last 3 years, best money I ever spent on bowling.

I just started using them this season. One of my team mates just got one too. Just use the ball with the best fitting thumb for the mold. Money well spent. Only about $15 for the mold.

Used them for at least the last 6 years and love them.

Like BrunsNick said they make a small notch on the center line so that the mold picks that up, it is on the back side of the thumb so you don't feel it. When the insert is made from the mold that leaves that small mark on the insert and that mark is lined up on the center line of the new ball.

As long as the new thumb hole is drilled at the same pitch then the inserted thumb insert will be oriented and pitched the same way.

The mold will pick up every little nuance of the thumb hole, bevel, taper, etc.

If you leave tape in the hole it will pick that up as well including the texture of the tape.

Just be sure to use a thumb hole in a condition (size) that you can use when your thumb is at it's maximum size. You can still add tape when your thumb shrinks.

I have done this for years, my driller has a mark on the insert that lines up with the center of grip so it is perfect every time and the best part it is easy to switch ball and not loose any feel.

Can these molds (slugs) be done at home so they are ready to be handed to your driller when you have a new ball to be drilled? Who makes these molds?

Thanks BG
