thumb insert questions
« on: August 24, 2004, 07:25:46 PM »
I have seen plenty of people use them in the last league I was in that ended in July.

The balls I use have already had the thumbholes drilled and touched up in some spots to make it better fit my thumb and some bevel around the opening.

Is it too late to have thumb inserts put in?

punkrawk77 -- It's not too late, but may or may not be a fairly big job.  It depends on how large the original thumb hole was and how much extra has been taken out of it.  The insert will require either a 1 1/8" or 1 1/4" round hole. If your driller can simply enlarge the existing hole, it's a simple job.  If not, the existing hole will have to be plugged.  Why do you want to go to inserts?  If you are getting a clean release without squeezing using the thumb hole as is, don't change.  Holes in the resin balls do tend to be a little sticky, so if your thumb is hanging that's a good reason to change.  But don't do it just because other bowlers are.  --  JohnP

I have one reactive ball, the power groove.

I do get a clean release right now. I was just thinking it might be a hair bit better with one.

Its curiosity more than anything since i have never used thumb inserts.

I was told that I wouldn't need them unless I was a pro carrying several balls with me on tour, and that with that many balls you want to have a similar feel with them, hence the thumb inserts. Then I questioned why so many people in the league I bowled in had thumb inserts yet they only used one ball all season.

its totally a comfort thing. Some people just like the feel of urethane inserts better then the inside of the ball. I have inserts in most of my stuff.

the idea is consitency... the inserts create consitency within ur arsenal... every ball feels the same. when bowlers switch balls they dont want it to feel different so the only thing they are changing is the hook potentail and maybe an angle here and there... instead of changing everything. it is preference ultimately.
