How to decide which NEW BALL fits ARSENAL?
« on: February 15, 2004, 07:00:48 PM »
I like to buy NEW EQUIPMENT! To help me decide on a ball I reference the NEW BALL advertisements and peruse the writings. One of the most important items (to me) is BEST CONDITION FOR BALL. Using that I can see where it will best fit in with other balls I own.

Recently BALL MANUFACTURERS have left BEST CONDITIONS off their advertisements. I don't understand how bowlers are deciding FOR or AGAINST new balls? Is it a crap shoot? Please don't tell me that the ball can be adjusted by ADDING to the surface .. that's not why I'm buying a NEW BALL. I don't want to hear either that you can determine BEST CONDITION by reading the SPECS .. my answer to that is .. why doesn't the manufacturer read the specs and tell me? Is there something I'm missing? Do I have to buy the BALL then find out where it fits? Think I may STOP buying NEW and wait for USED equipment .. let somebody else be the guinea pig!

I agree!

Here is my suggestion when picking out new equipment.  Make 90% of your decision based on coverstock.

For example, if you love light load particle balls, stick with those.  Or if you have success with a specific cover, like the Dyno-thane Soaker, then stick with those.

Additionally, I would recommend symmetrical cores.  Asymmetrical cores can be awesome with the right drilling, but unless you already know that drilling, you might be disappointed unless you are ok with plugged balls.

Don't be afraid to try a new ball company.  And certainly don't be afraid to ask the staffers about a ball.  I get a couple private messages a week asking for ball/layout recommendations for Dyno-thane.  I'm sure other ball reps will be just as helpful.

What type of condition are you trying to get a ball for?

The problem we, and the manufacturers run into is the lack of standardization in the industry.  For example, I consider my home house medium oil.  When I bowled in Florida what that called medium was dry to me.  Which standard is the manufacturer to use to describe a medium condition, the one from Florida or the one for my area.  Either way, one of them is going to be wrong and not match up.

The only thing I like about Brunswick is their charts.  If I’ve thrown one of their balls, a quick glance at the chart will show me what is stronger, weaker, longer, shorter, etc.

I’m like you Joe, haven’t bought a new ball in years, just try something used.  Probably why so many bowlers are enamored about one company or the other, it’s almost impossible to jump from one to the other without causing overlap with what you already have or getting a different reaction than what you expected.

I really like the D/T charts, they picture where and what condition the ball was designed for. But as mentioned above one mans dry may be anothers oil. Joe, e-mail me anytime and I'll try and get you an answer.

Fine Joe, I see that, but your original post kind of reads to me like a generic overall type statement,....my fault.

Yes, if the company didn't have an "intended" condition....that would be irritating.......

I hate to say it, but Lane 1 does a real poor job at marketing.  From what I have read (although I don't study their marketing materials) almost ALL their equipment claims do the same thing... clear heads and hook in the backend.
