Dead Bowling Balls - No Such Thing!
« on: January 28, 2009, 04:04:01 AM »
I see a lot of people on here complaining of dead bowling balls after x games.  I don't know what these people are doing with their balls except absolute neglect and laziness.  I have owned several bowling balls.  The only time a bowling ball is dead is when it is cracked open (near the bridge or the entire ball is splitting).

Every ball no matter how old can be rejuvenated very cheaply.  I turned used balls into awesome balls all the time.  I do the same with other stuff like cars, motorcycles, computer equipment, walls, etc.  I turned my old dorm room into a state-of-the-art theater while still in college with NO JOB with just 2 buckets of paint and a projector.

I keep my car clean outside, inside, and under the hood.  I got 50,000 miles + on it too and no issues at all.  Then I see Mr. Crappy Driver have break issues, engine problems, etc. after just 10,000 miles.  People don't take care of anything.  I always said you can tell a lot from a person by looking at the DVD's/CD's they own.  Video games especially.  All you gotta do is count the scratches on them and you will see how horrible they are as owners of anything.

So with bowling balls, I bet these same people are rolling their balls, probably in the gutter.  Then slamming the balls in their bags.  Leaving them in the car or shed or outside because they are too lazy.  Won't take the 5 minutes needed to use alcohol or any cleaner to wipe it down and store it away.  You know how I know?  I see the same nasty balls every week during league.  My balls are clean and others just look like they came from a freezer.

Give me a break.  I got over 1000 games on my Vertigo and like 5 nicks and nothing else.  The nicks are like scratches at best and no dents or anything else.  All I see on here is "oh my god ball is dead after 50 games, 60 games, x games".

Yeah sure!

In all my years of bowling(26), I have had 1 core crack (PIRANHA-C), 1 ball crack(TRIFECTA-shot 796 with it the previous night), and 2 balls die(RISING, BITE).
The piranha, I left it in the car overnite. MY FAULT!!!!!!!!!!!!

The trifecta, ball cracked on the STORM LOGO. Storm gave a PASSION to replace it. (TRIFECTA was a defective ball).

The rising has become a little mid lane, then nothing ball. It was a GREAT backend ball. NOW ABSOLUTELY USELESS!!!
( I will admit I did NOT clean the ball very often back then).

The BITE was cleaned every night, EVERY NIGHT!!!!!!! ABSOLUTELY TRASH!!!!!!!
( the pro shop operator tried to bring it back, and finally gave up on it)                                               It was given away- FREE.

This is MY experience. MINE, I don't buy ebonite, track, hammer, or columbia anymore. (I forgot about the columbia EPX) ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT A DOUBT TRASH!!!

COME ON!
GIVE IT TO ME!
I HEAR THE GRUMBLINGS.
YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO SAY SOMETHING!
I HAVE TO BE A IDIOT, OR DON'T MAINTAIN MY EQUIPMENT OR SOMETHING!

LISTEN-this is just MY experience, I'm not saying that those are bad  ball  companies. I have a TRAUMA/ER, AZURE ZONE PRO, & INTENSE INFERNO, I still use A LOT. I must have 1000 games on the ZONE, 600 games on the TRAUMA, & 250 games on the INTENSE.
Right now I CARRY a YEAH BABY, BLACK PEARL, VIRTUAL GRAVITY, & INTENSE INFERNO. This WORKS FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 LET THE NAME CALLING BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A little paranoid are we?  Geez.

Ok maybe then I have Roy Hobb's bowling ball I will talk about the history of the Vertigo of which the latest pic as late of last month is taken and is in my sig.

-Got it when it came out in 2005.
-Bowled with it entire summer with coworkers afterwork
-Took it to VT to bowl in the house ON CAMPUS (WOOD, NOT MAINTAINED, NO OIL)
-Easily had 200 games by then (games were like $1/game)
-2006 bowled here and practiced a lot
-2007 bowled league, tournaments, the works
-2008 bowled league, tournaments, etc.
-2009 bowling with it still

-Still shines.  I have also put it in my dishwasher several times.  I also have manual sanded it with my bare hands because I don't have a spinner.

Now it has over 1000 games and still hooks like the first day, maybe even more because I got like 50lbs more muscle on me.  And now I have it at 4000+ grit.

BEFORE that I bowled with the C300 Ti Messenger for like 8+ years before it cracked near the fingers.

First and foremost, I take care of my bowling balls, clean every set, utilize my pro shop, etc.  I won't say my hammer (ebonite) bowling balls died, but they did seem to have less or a sporadic reaction after 75 games.  I had a black widow, black widow pearl, black widow bite, and resurgence (2007-2008 play).  In the summer of 2008, I moved to storm and have a gravity shift, virtual gravity, hyroad, and street rod pearl and have a much more consistent and reliable ball reaction.  If I had to name a ball of mine that I would say died it was the black widow bite.  It is like that ball changed overnight.

the change in reaction i get and have seen.

but to me people make this too complicated. all i use is clean n dull and constantly rub till its totally dry on 1/4 of the ball. if your ball is still dead after that just throw it out as clean n dull WILL get the oil out.

Wow, what does your gf say about the rough skin of your hands?  I mean, besides 'ouch'?  With your hands, she doesn't have to use Nair.

I'll let you compare the before and after reaction of my old Rock On and Shock Trauma and then you tell me there's no such thing...

But I will say that I feel that people are way too quick to call "ball death!" just because the reaction you are seeing isn't what you think you should get.

Why do pro's keep drilling new equipment if old stuff hits as well as new?

Why did Michael Jordan wear a brand new pair of sneakers for every basketball game?

Because they can.

The don't necessarily dies they just never have the same reaction as the first 50 or so games sometime even with cleaning and resufacing as well..

I have about 200+ games on my BuzzBomb now. I have a ball spinner, so maintenance is easier for me.

After every session I clean with Simple Green/Alcohol (before I leave the alley).

I use Clean N Dull to deep clean the cover stock, polish it to where I like it, and toss on some Docs Magic Elixir about every couple of months.

I'd be hard pressed to get much oil out of the ball.

It reacts just like it did the day I bought it.

Most bowlers that are using old equipment are in houses that have a lot of free hook.  Whether it's a cake house shot with dry to the right, or a tougher house with dry on the back, both shots allow the use of eralier reactives and older equipment.

Houses with newer synthetics don't create as much friction.  They may create a lot of hook, but that depends on the equipment.  The pros bowl on a lot of hook, not necessarily a lot of friction.  And yes they can drill up what they want but not all do, and they don't drill just because they can.

Most pros though don't have a ball long enough to experience any loss in reaction (death).  Us mere mortals have to use balls longer and will see the reaction of a ball diminish over time.  It's like a new tennis ball fresh out of the can.  Bounces pretty high, the more you use it the less bouncy it gets.  It still bounces off the racket fine, but not as much.  Same this with bowling, the ball still hooks, just not as much as new.
