I have used the throttle and Phenom and the Phenom hooks a tad bit more on heavy oil. To me, the Phenom hits much harder as well.

I have never thrown the Lane #1 ball, sorry.

I think the Super Carbide Bomb is rated higher in BTM, as far as hook goes. It's cover is a high load particle, which is better for heavy oil. In heavy oil, the Phenom will skate, until it hits dry boards. So if there's no dry boards, it won't hook that much or carry very well.

The key is to get the ball into a heavy roll on heavy oil. Lane #1 balls probably roll heavier than all other balls, due to their diamond core. =:^D

According to BTM, the Super Carbide Bomb is still at the pinnacle of heavy load particle balls for oil.

I have thrown one and I had to sell it....not enough oil here in 4 leagues for the ball.

I think you can almost make this decision by picking your favorite color!

I think the Phenom would be a good choice. Adjust the surface if need be. Just yesterday I tried it wet sanded to 800. Worked great. I have not seen enough oil yet to sand it more.

With the BTM ratings.......I love the reviews they put out, they are a good starting point. There are several examples where they are just wrong though. To name one----they had the Mutant as a ball that outhooks the Super Freak.....they had the super Freak getting more length, when that is definately not the case. It is more than me that thinks that.

I have not used the Throttle or the Carbide Bomb. Using my Phenom side by side with a buddy of mine using a Throttle---the Throttle rolls sooner (I have 2 phenoms one rolls much sooner than the one I was using when we were bowling) than the one I have set up for length. It covered fewer boards than the Phenom at that time, but I think that was due to the strong backend reaction of the Phenom.

goodluck with your decision.

The BTM  ratings are based on 3 different styles and many times multiple drill patterns so I tend to put some credence into them.

On the Mutant/Super Freak issue I can say that of the balls I have seen, the Mutant tends to have more overall hook. One can see where the Super has more backend but the tendency is for the Mutant to cover more boards than the SuperFreak.

As we all know....there are far too many variables to say that this ball outhooks this one by 5 boards on any condition.

I fight this battle constantly with a few bowlers in my house. I tell them less is more. One guy was struggling with his Erase It last year so he said he needed more hook. He got an Icon 300 (not from me I might add). That ball moves less than the Erase It. Any guesses why? Not enough oil to keep it rolling. His rev rate and ball speed are both too low to make an aggressive ball work. I told him to polish the Erase It. He looked at me as if I had a little green alien sitting on my shoulder. I said...do it. The ball will hook more. He still doesn't believe me...despite the fact that I showed him with my Emerald Saw and the Super Bomb when I had it.Emerald hooked more because I could not keep the Super turning due to the lack of oil.

Drill patterns, coverstock prep, rev rate, bal lspeed, lane conditions, lane type.....way too many variables.
