Dealing with a guy that takes advantage of a rule
« on: October 08, 2009, 05:13:57 AM »
I'm bowling in a handicap league that unfortuneatly has horrible rules.  Our league just has a rule that says no new bowlers in a position round or roll off. We are a 4 man league but can have 6 on the team.  I have a feeling there is a team that is having one member of their team only bowl a handful of games(with a lower average than normal at that) so that they can come in during the roll off and dominate.  Even though this is allowed by the rules I think it is kind of sh*tty sportsmanship.
What would you do?  I don't like to stoop to those levels but I also don't like getting blown out when bowling for 1st place.

I suggest that you don't let it bother you. If it does you're likely to lose for that reason. EVERY BOWLER, regardless of how talented, has to outscore you to win.

This team with "Super Bowler" has heaped a ton of pressure on themselves. They're supposed to win. If things don't go their way (mark my words) they'll start pointing fingers at each other and they will self-destruct mentally.

No FIGJAM intended, but I compete against bowlers every week who are younger and have great physical games. These guys have higher rev rates, etc., but my strength is that nothing bothers me. If they are striking in bunches early, I just do what I can and wait for the lanes to transition, and then I can usually do well after that.

Bowling is, and always will be, about managing friction, repeating shots, and managing transition. If you and your team can keep a cool head you will more likely "see" the shot as it changes. Stay focused, stay relaxed, and good luck.

Doing this kind of stuff has a tendency to backfire. Just do your thing and don't worry about them.

exactly.. that is my dilema.. I'm not the kind of person to do that to win..I would never ever do it myself on my own.. but the fact that they are doing it makes me want to make it a level playing field.. I still don't want to be an *ss and go to that level..

Very good piece of advice.  I wouldn't want anyone bowling with me who even thinks about bagging, even if it's "because the other teams do it".  Rationalizing cheating doesn't make it not cheating.

It won't help you now, but next year at the beginning of the season meeting, add a rule where you have to have a minimum games bowled in order to bowl in a position round or roll off.  I've seen leagues where you had to have in 21 games, and others made you bowl half the league in order to participate in the position round or roll off.  Anyone who bowls bad enough to "help" at the end of the year would have hurt his team enough in those games that the team probably wouldn't make the roll off anyway.

Next yr suggest that the rule be changed so that the guy has to have bowled so many games to bowl in the finals.

Or develop rule where there is floating subs and NONE of them are allowed to bowl on position night

We added a rule this year that anyone bowling in PR or roll-off, whether a 6th man on the roster or roving sub has to have 9 games.  If you don't have 9 games, you don't pick up a ball, period.  I wanted to do 12 games, but it made it more difficult for teams that regularly rotate members to field a legal lineup for the first position round after 8 weeks.

I agree that it sucks.  In past years, we required 9 games for roving subs but any rostered team member could bowl PR or roll-off.  What ended up happening was some teams would load their roster up with an extra two or three bowlers three weeks before the PR, and let them bowl with no average.  Of course, they set a 220+ average for three games and it never gets reported to the USBC because they have so few games.
