Decent arsenal? Or do I need something?
« on: February 10, 2013, 04:49:02 PM »
I'm rebuilding my arsenal, and I think it'll be a pretty good one. I just want a little feedback, and see if I'm missing something.
I am always finding myself with too many bowling balls, and selling some 2-3 times per bowling season, and find a lot of overlap when I do so.
Here is what I was thinking.
Heavy oil- DV8 Hell Raiser Revenge probably drilled long and strong.
Medium/heavy- Storm Cross Road probably drilled a little on the weaker side, a little earlier and smoother roll.
Medium/dry- Hammer Nail Smoke and Fire probably weak skid snap.

My speed is aroun 17-17.5 mph at the pin deck.
Rev rate around 400-450
Pap is 4in right/1in up
Not sure of axis tilt

I only bowl legue on kegel challenge shots, but will start bowling tournaments soon.

I think overall, you have a pretty good foundation.  The only possible gaps I can find would be having a solid to compliment the CrossRoad and then possibly a hybrid to compliment the Nail.  The reason I think this is because tournament shots can be different from what you're used to and having mostly skid/snap is not always the best option.

The CrossRoad drilled weaker will work on most medium volumes, but medium-heavy patterns are not the strongest suit for this ball.  That's the gap I see between that and the HRR.   In this case, I could see you going with a Roto Grip Disturbed to fill the gap nicely.  That ball will handle medium-heavy volume well and rolls earlier in the mids to give you good predictability.  Plus, you can play straighter or move in as needed.  This fills the gap for the fresh if the HRR is too much but the CrossRoad is not enough.

The other spot I can see you adding 1 other ball is on the medium-light patterns.  The Nail is a good choice for drier conditions and the pearl cover will give you good backend.  On the fresh with skid/snap, you'll see some over/under in some cases.  This is where I would see you going with something such as the Roto Grip Wrecker or the Storm Frantic.  Another option if you go with a solid cover would be

Either of these balls have good hybrid covers that allow for easy length, good midlane read, and still give you a good backend and would be a great step down from the CrossRoad.  More importantly, you would not have to make as much of a move stepping down to these as compared to CrossRoad to Nail.  Basically you're able to keep more similar lines and angles, which is important.

From there, I would step down to the Nail since that will give you the most skid/snap when the lanes really start to become torched.

Other possible ideas include:
Heavy oil- Roto Grip Defiant or the new Storm Sync.  These balls will handle as much as or more oil than the HRR.  Both of these have great covers/cores and could also fit you well.  I haven't thrown a Sync, but have a Defiant.  That ball has proven itself in heavier oil patterns that I see in houses around here.

Light Oil- The Roto Grip Shatter or the Storm Tropical Heat Pearl can easily work here also.  The Neutron Core on the Shatter is tough to beat with how good it is though.

With that being said, here is what I would do:
Heavy oil- DV8 Hell Raiser Revenge, Roto Grip Defiant, or Storm Sync
Medium/heavy- Roto Grip Disturbed
Medium- Storm Cross Road
Medium/light- Roto Grip Wrecker or Storm Frantic
Light- Hammer Nail Smoke and Fire or Roto Grip Shatter

Hope this helps and good luck.

Maybe I can see what else my proshop has used laying around for sale. I am picking up the HRR for $25, 16lb single drill. I know there is 2 misfits, a marauder, an original HR and a HRT from the same guy. He used to be staffed with DV8, hated it, switched back to storm/RG and is selling all of his DV8 for cheap. I absolutely hated my frantic. Traded that ball without using it much, bc that was extremely over under for me, even after multiple surface adjustments.
Ive thrown a Crossroad at a demo day, and it wasn't as weak as im hearing from a lot of people. I actually enjoyed throwing it, because it was smooth, and consistent.
Thank you for your input. If I happen to run into trouble with a gap not being filled, I will definitely refer to your post and see what I might be able to do.

Another idea is that if your pro shop has a Rising Star around, you could easily substitute that for the Frantic/Wrecker mentioned earlier.  Also, if he has an Outlaw laying around, you could use that in place of the Disturbed.

If you lean DV8, you could go with the original HR by drilling it weaker to fill the spot between the CrossRoad and HRR.

I decided not to go with the Hell Raiser Revenge, and bought a used S/D Victory Road Solid instead. It was a left handers ball, so the right side will be fresh. Im going to get it drilled the same as I was going to with the HRR, but Im thinking this way there wont be such a big gap between the crossroad and VRS as it would be with the HRR. Besides, I doubt I would ever see enough oil to use the HRR. I think the VRS will be plenty of ball.
I bought the Hammer Nail today. Laid out 50x4x50. This ball will be incredible when the lanes dry out. This is my first NEW hammer ball, and the little bit of practice I used it, Im impressed.

The Victory Road Solid is quite a bit of ball for the price.  There definitely won't be as much of a gap between that and the CrossRoad.  VR Solid will handle fresher conditions, then easily switch down to the CrossRoad as the lanes transition and you're in good shape.
