I can't make my right side spares!!
« on: March 30, 2005, 11:50:37 PM »
Especially the 3 pin combinations, i.e. 3-6-10.  I'm trying to go straight with my plastic but I either dump it in the gutter about halfway down the lane, or pick off the 6-10, or, like last night, whiff it COMPLETELY!!  I feel like Chris Barnes!!  I'm trying to use the TRIAX system starting left foot on 30 targeting 15 for the 10 pin and moving 3 bds. right for each other pin.  I've tried moving in to 35, but the angle messes me up and I throw it in the gutter almost every time.  Any suggestions??

Nollster - if it makes you feel any better, when I first switched to the straight-at-everything approach to spare shooting, the 3-6 combinations were the devil for me as well.  Most of the time I'd pick off the 6 or 6-10 and leave the 3 pin standing there laughing at me.

Now, my spare percentage (I keep track) for 3-6 combinations is 94%.  The key for me was practice, practice, practice.  During practice, don't wait to leave a 3-6 combination, go after the 3-6 on your first shot.  It took games of doing nothing but shooting at the 3-6 pocket to get my spare % up there.
That's exactly what I've been experiencing.  I've been trying to spend at least a full game to 2 at the start of practice just going at the 3, 6 or 10 on all shots.  I'll go for the 10 until I get 4 in a row, then move to the 6, etc., until I've made it through the 3 pin.  Then I start working on 6-10 and 3-6 combos.  Had quite a few "-" up on the scoreboard and you should see the looks on the faces of people trying to figure why I suck so bad!!  It helped -- when I started throwing strike balls, I didn't miss any 10s, actually make a 3-6-10, whiffed a 6-9-10 and chopped a 1-3-6....picked the head pin right outta there!!

Sounds like you're going about things in productive manner.  Practice needs to be about you, not what people think about you.  If I get a little rusty, I'll spend three or four (sometimes more) games where I do nothing but shoot at one corner pin on the first shot and the other corner pin on the second.  I've had good-intentioned people come up to me during such a practice session and say "You know what you're doing wrong?" when I was in the middle of a 40-in-a-row streak.  Truly knowledgable people will recognize what you're doing and leave you alone.

Good luck.  With a little work and perseverance, I'm sure your spare conversions will increase.
