Title: Decline in bowling participation..one aspect identified!
Post by: AlonzoHarris on February 26, 2019, 10:43:30 AM
Wives...

My entire team, including myself realized one night during discussion how every time we leave for league our wives complain. There must be men giving up on fighting the nagging and throwing in the towel!?

Am I onto something here?

Wife would actually prefer if I didn't day pre-bowl my unsanctioned league every week instead of getting out and socializing.  Bit of an outlier though as I only bowl league so I can get league priced games rest of week.

For starters, your wife needs to get her own hobby that she can do on your bowling night(s). Other than that, these guys quitting bowling over a nagging woman need to grow a pair.

Of course, the best solution is to marry a woman who loves bowling like you do. I did.

Decline in bowling participation = people who bowl leagues are dying of old age

Or don’t marry a nagging bitch, I know I didn’t. I’m not trying to hear that shit and I don’t feel sorry for the guys that chose that life.

This could also be a big part unfortunately.

My wife already knows I ignore stupid talk that interferes with my hobby.

That would be great if she was also into it...or would it, hmm.

My wife likes horses. I like bowling. She gets a horse, I get to bowl. Bonus, I don't go to the stable because I'm deathly allergic of everything in a barn and have demonstrated that several times. Her hobby costs way more, so she doesn't fight me on entry fees.

As far as league, I am in no way interested in bowling on a house shot. Wanna give me a challenge, I'll show up. I have much better things to do than take a night out of my week to bowl with whiny entitled house hacks on the China. If they're going to complain, give them a dang good reason to at least.

Now, I'd bowl a mixed league with my wife because

1. I genuinely like spending time with my wife
2. It would give us some time away from the kids.

I'm honestly starting to lean towards dropping my last league and going strictly tournaments and practice around scheduling. How many tournaments a year would you say you enter?

Been trying to buy our house, so right now, 0 lol, but I'd like to get back into about 12 or more a year. Hopefully finances line up and I can bowl a couple of pba regionals here near me.

Most winter leagues are too TOO LONG !!!!   32/34/36 weeks -- ITS INSANE.

Once it's sunny outside, the last place I am is inside a bowling alley.

Used to, but can't justify it until financials are in proper order. Being grown up sucks.

Bowlmor has 8 week non sanctioned leagues that just renew several times a year.  Big props to them for that.  Not everyone's cup of tea but works well for me.

Funny thing about those 8 week programs (at least at my center) is the vast majority of people will bowl 8 weeks, 8 weeks, 8 weeks, & another 8 weeks for the same 32 LOL.  I started a program in October (10 weeks) took a couple weeks off for the holidays and re-started them for 8 weeks.  And next week they'll start another 10 week program.  I average about 75% retention on these types of groups which is pretty decent I think.

We are still a league orientated center Sun-Fri and try to give plenty of options for those that don't want the 35 week commitment, even though a lot of these types of groups end up being right around 32 weeks at the end of the day.  It's  constant work but the rewards are well worth it.  I'd also venture to say that 25% of these newer people will get hooked on the game and end up joining another "full time" program, if only we could figure out how to make that number increase to the original retention.  Work in progress I suppose
