Knee support question
« on: September 16, 2003, 07:39:05 PM »
Lately, the approaches at my bowling alley seem to be really tacky.  Like tacky to the point of your shoe stopping, and when you expect to slide that really does a number on ones knee.  I have periodic knee pains as it is (that I should probably get checked out), but lately these approaches seem to make it hurt more regularly, at least while I am bowling.

Now I have found if I wrap a small towel fairly tight around my leg, just above the knee, it relieves a lot of the strain on my knee, and it is no longer painful to bowl.  My question is, do they make something like this that is designed to go there?  Because I would rather buy something designed for my leg, opposed to using a dirty towel!

Now I can't use a full knee brace, because they don't allow my leg to bend enough, and are way to restricting when I try to slide.  I just need something like those tennis elbow braces designed for my knee.  Any information about something like this, or anything you guys know on how to solve knee problems is greatly appreciated.

Oh, I am using SST V's with the red heel and the 6 sole (i think).

I  have tender knees also. I bought these soles for my dexters and they allow more of a slide.

they are worth the investment.

Yes they do.  You could even get one of the patella straps and just move it above your kneecap instead of below it.

I don't really play cards and I am not 79, but it fits together somehow.

I have more problems with the stickier soles.  Usually I have the 8 sole and change the heel for brake.  However, I wish I could find a heel with the smoothness of the #2, and slightly less brake than the horseshoe #5, but not as much slip as the red heel.

Anyone else have problems "skipping" with the horseshoe #5?

Hey 9andawiggle, could I suggest buying a replacement no. 2 sole, and cutting it to the shape of your heel? Did that for a friend of mine who had a similar problem finding an ideal heel, and I must admit I have just done the same. Just a suggestion.

Thanks, Reality Check.  I had kinda thought about that, but wasn't sure how well it would work.  I'll have to try it out.

Well, I didn't order a replacement #2 sole, since I have never used it, but I cut it into the shape of my heel anyway and used it last night.  Worked great!! Plenty of brake, yet it didn't grab enough to strain my knees.  Thanks for the tip!

What you might have is an arch support problem in your bowling shoes.  I was climbing stairs all day and bought a pair of new work shoes.  They had little or no arch support.  This combined with no arch support in my Lind's Classics was causing my slide leg to hurt around the knee.  I went out and bought a new pair of Sketchers with good arch support to work in all day and got a set of Dr. Scholl's sport insert for my bowling shoes.  The type of Dr. Scholl's I bought are the blue heel insert for running.  Worked great!!!
