Most of the time, people are referring to a mini-tournament that either

1) involves league bowlers the last night of the season while the bowl-offs are taking place between the top teams.  A separate entry fee is paid specifically for the sweeper, and prizes are paid that same night for the winners that night.

2) acts as a promotional device and qualifying round for a bigger tournament.  Entrants put up an entry fee that is typically smaller than the entry fee for the bigger tournament for a chance to win the sweeper and advance into the later rounds of the bigger tournament.  Usually, in a qualifying sweeper, a smaller percentage of bowlers advance than in the bigger tournament (such as 1-in-10 advance instead of 1-in-5) which is how the tournament recoups prize fund from the lower entry.

basically a "sweeper" is a mini-tournament, either held by itself, some centers run Saturday night Sweepers, or in conjunction with a larger format...at the SrHighRoller,..they run 2-3 game sweepers before-between squads-and evenings to give bowlers a chance to "play and tune their games" while waiting for their Roller qualifying squads,..sweepers run brackets and high pots, and usually are only one squad with an immediate pay off..
