Saw new bowler...
« on: March 26, 2004, 03:16:57 AM »
Okay so I'm at the alley and i see i new bowler talking to the pro shop guy and he is getting a Columbia - Hyde drilled for him.  I talked to him and asked him how long he has been playing and he said that it was the first time being at a bowling alley since he was in elementary...  Going straight to a ball with hook?  What do you think about that? (BTW he was my age [17])  Would you even suggest it lol?

I wasted my first two years bowling straight and developing bad habits, it was hard learning the hook ball from that point. I would YES GO TO HOOK WHEN YOU ARE YOUNGER THAN OLDER , i would recommend coaching for him in group sessions like one of my friends offers for 60.00 for 5 1 hour sessions. He has helped many newbies get to 180-190 in under a year flat so it is bargain if anyone lives in las vegas area.

Its better to start someone with a hook, just 10 times harder to teach and for them to learn. Actully I learned how to hook, the bad way, with 2 fingers, then figured out thats bad and learned with all 3.

AM not A CHICK OF BOWLING but I wanted to be in Manda's clique And why would I "saw" pins in half, THATS A WASTE OF PINS! I'd rather blow it over with my storm, and 21mph ball speed on dry shots.

CoopJrCurler -- The release makes the ball hook, it is not "built into" the ball.  The cover stock and the core can enhance the hook, but will not create it.  I think beginner bowlers should start with a relatively inexpensive reactive or particle ball and spend the money saved on lessons so they can learn to release the ball properly to create hook.  --  JohnP
