thumb insert with extra grip
« on: September 01, 2004, 05:17:08 AM »
Hi, my father has a problem. Can you help?
When he was a kid he had an accident with his thumb. Now all those years later he still has problem with it. How? Well his thumb gets smaller after he throws a few times. So when he starts bowling his thumb hole is a bit to small but after he throws a few times, the hole is the small. After searching for a solution for months, we finally got one: A thumb insert with extra grip. The insert has a grey piece in it that gives more grip. It improved his game a lot ( 2 times 300 ). But now, we can't find those inserts anymore. Does anybody know a company or site where we can find them. Tnx!

They now make an interchangable thumb insert, that you can change in seconds. I built a proto-type back in the early eigthies because I had the same problems but swelling was my problem. It works great and is easy to use. Oh yah the ball I tried it on was an LT-48! some one else here should be able to tell you where to get them. hope this helps!

Has he tried using white textured tape?
Another solution would be Ron Clifton's Magic Carpet go to www.bowl4fun.com for details on the Magic Carpet.

I use both and it works great for me.

I haven't seen the ones you're talking about for years.  I would recommend you try RonC magic carpet.

Does the "insert" you speak of look like this?  More or less white tape on the edges and a textured mesh in the middle.

Yes J_mac, it looks exactly like you describe it. White with a grey grip zone in the middle.

I don't think these little buggers have been made for years.  Thumb Chums (sp?) were originally made here in Lansing though.  Good supply at local pro shops, but I don't think I have ever seen these torture devices online.

I think Turbo is making the adjustable thumb inserts that you twist and put a smaller one in!

There are three removable thumb inserts that I know of:
1. Turbo Grip's Switch Grip
2. Grip Loc
3. Thom's Thumbs

I tried Grip Loc and Switch Grip and decided to go with Switch Grip in all my equipment about 2 months ago.  I have four sizes of oval insert that I can switch between depending on how my big or small my thumb is at that time.  And when I switch balls, the thumb insert I am using just goes from one ball into the other.

Bottom line: no more tape and the exact same thumb feel in every ball.

Thanx to all of you. I think I'm going to try it with Turbo-grip , if they are available here in Belgium.
