Coaching- Everyone should have some.
« on: August 13, 2003, 07:58:56 PM »
Ive been a member on the site for a while and have told you of the difficulty of finding a coach in my area of the UK for a while now. Well the best bowler in my league has finally plucked up the courage to give lessons. I dont think he wanted the competition before now. Not really, its just that some of us have complained enough that hes decided to start doing it again.
I had my first session on Sunday and he had me getting lower at the line and squeezing only with my fingers not my thumb. Before this I could not for the life of me understand how you did this. He also had me pressing down with my non bowling hand for stability and keeping my bowling hand under the ball a little more and a few other things.
Well I cant begin to tell you how much difference ive found.
Accuracy has improved and ball revs have increased substantially. I went and had a session at the lanes and worked on the changes.
I had a few practices before i started scoring and found that I was getting a much better shape to my ball and better hit.
When i felt it was coming off well and fairly consistently i started scoring.
After a few games with decent scores i went through what I can only say was a wonderful time.
I had scores of 237,200,178,252,223. I know they are not super fantastic to some of you guys, but to me they are my 2nd and my 5th best games ever. I then had a break ( had to go and tell the misses) then I averaged about 185 for the next eight games. I was really tired and i think if I had been used to bowling so many games then the scores of those would have been much higher.
I know its a long post but I just wanted to share with you guys who are trying to establish your games just how much you can benifit from some proper coaching.
I now KNOW what I am doing right and what I need to work on. No quess work just the facts. Try it and I think many of you will be supprised.
I admire all of you guys who do coaching, I dont think you realise how much you brighten peoples lives with the help you give.
Before this I was very disheartened with the game, now I cant wait to go tonight.

I agree with the coaching. I have had one of the guys from my pro shop helping me over the summer and it shows. My average is up 8 pins from the winter. Although, I still need lots of work on my spare game, everything else is feeling good. I stay low at the line now and have very good controlled form with a nice free arm swing. My consistency is up a great deal and I am hitting the pocket on a regular basis. The only things I feel I need to work on is my spares and squeezing with my thumb at the bottom of my release. Once I achieve those two things, I could average well over 200.

How am I supposed to knock all 10 down with one ball?!?
